Truly enjoyed reading this book. Makes me want to read more from James Patterson. Even though Alex Cross was incapacitated for most of the book, it was still his brain that figured out the clues. Quite an interesting mystery too. Love the short chapters. Very fast paced. Oh, and I love Nana Mama and his wife Bree and the little girl too - very smart!

Is it possible to give zero or negative stars? James Patterson just needs to stop slapping his name on anything and everything. Absolute garbage.
Not my fav Alex Cross book. The difference in writing style was very noticeable. Not sure if he’s testing the waters for a Sampson spinoff but if he is, I’d still prefer that he writes it himself.

This book is marketed as an Alex Cross novel, but in reality it focuses almost exclusively on John Sampson. Alex and John are working together on an inter-agency group initiated by the president in hopes of halting the myriad terrorist attacks across the U.S. Early the book Alex is sidelined after an ambush and is recuperating in the ICU after surgery. Alex and the rest of the Cross gang are all present in the book, but are really just tertiary characters.
The tone is very different from the typical Alex Cross novels, and I would label it more as a military thriller. John Sampson goes rogue along with FBI buddy Ned Mahoney. And I was a little surprised by the level of violence; the body count is almost as high as a John Wick movie. In the end, John and Ned save the day...the president...and the country.
It's a quick read, includes Patterson's trademark short chapters, and held my interest. However, it definitely feels like the beginning of a spinoff series for John Sampson, as is evidenced by the fact that Patterson has a co-author on this book (one thing he hasn't had for any of the other Alex Cross books).

What I Did Like:
+Sampson has LONG been a favorite character so this book was a great chance to really get to know him. He’s a lot like Alex, which we knew, but seeing their differences sort of pop out through this story was refreshing.
+The story moves fast and brings in a lot of conflict. There’s a lot of action. It’s intense and captivating. There’s no chance you’ll get bored reading a book in this series, that’s for sure.
+The ending works. It’s satisfying and ties up enough loose ends to keep the reader happy while making it clear there’s more to this series.
Who Should Read This One:
-Obviously, fans of the series. Specifically, Sampson fans. This is a glimpse into the big man’s brain and it’s thrilling.
-In general, readers who like huge bad guys on epic scales facing off against good cops will like this one.
My Rating: 4 Stars
