4.01 AVERAGE

I read this for my diverse children's literature class.

I read both the 1989 version and the 2015 version. The updated version was definitely needed.

This is the first year (to my knowledge) that I am teaching a student with same-sex parents. I was curious how authors approach the subject in children's book. Newman (who I saw speak several weeks ago) does a beautiful job of explaining the family dynamics as simple and the same as those with cisgender parents. There is so much love in Heather's life and this book made me very happy. My daughter also enjoyed the story.

It’s cool that this was written in 1989. I wasn’t a huge fan of the illustration style, but it was a sweet story to show different family structures.

This anniversary edition includes a wonderful afterward by the author on the book's origins, attention it has received (positive and negative), and why it is important for all children to have mirrors and windows.
lighthearted medium-paced

I loved this widely celebrated story about how families come in all different forms! Heather’s favorite number is two, especially because she has two mommies! On her first day of school when the class talks about family, another student asks Heather what her dad does for work and it sparks a conversation (and art project) about what makes up a family and what it really means to be family. A classic!

This week is banned books week, and I wanted to read at least 1 book that was banned. So I asked people from Goodreads to recommend me a few books.

This one was apparently banned because, well, for the simple reason of having a family that is not your standard one. Instead of a Mommy and a Daddy, this little girl has 2 Mommies.

I really loved this book, and while you could clearly see the age of the book (drawings), it was also clearly ahead of its age because of the subject.

Poor Heather, luckily her mothers are there to help her out when people ask about her Daddy. And of course kids are easy and soon they find out a lot of children have more than one Mommy or Daddy (because parents divorce and remarry).

I would really recommend this book to everyone. I think this would be a wonderful reading material for kids, since it teaches about love, about family, about a whole lot more. This book made me smile and cheer.

A new edition of this classic story of how all kinds of families are special. Cute, but I still don't like the illustration style.

The illustrations on the new edition bring the book much more to life. I had been meh about this book in the past but my daughter really enjoyed this edition and the pictures have a lovely busy energy that feels realistic to the 2-4 y/o "starting preschool" vibe.

This book was so adorable
