Heather Has Two Mommies by Leslea Newman is the heartwarming story of a little girl named Heather and her two loving mommies. Heather is starting her first day of school and everyone is talking about their mommies and daddies. Heather starts to learn the true meaning of family and how it doesn't matter if you had two mommies, two daddies, one parent, or multiple parents. Family is people that love each other. I loved this story and the message behind it. I thought it represented diverse families very well. I would use this in my classroom to teach that all families are different.

THIS IS SUCH A GOOD BOOK! I love the whimsy and the charm throughout the entire story, and the illustrations are so much fun! You can already tell from the very start of the book that Heather has such a loving and supporting, caring and wonderful family life, and the way that the story handles the question about what families are like for other people is so wonderful! I adore the diversity of family situations they described, because no two family situations are alike, even when they seem to be on the surface. And emphasizing the message that it's about the love that a family has for each other that's the most important thing, no matter what your family looks like, is such a fantastic message. This is absolutely a must-read book for everyone! A staple for all kids! I loved it!

I adore this book. It does an amazing job in showing that families come in all shapes and sizes. That as long as your have a family who loves you, it doesn't matter if there are two mommies, or daddies, or one mommy, or just a grandma, etc. It explains that a family is made up of people who love you. And I think that's beautiful The art is so cute. It reminds me of colored pencils and I love the sketchy look to it. This is such a cute book and so inclusive. I adore books like this. It teaches children (and adults) that as long as there is love, you can have a beautiful family.

Got to read this at a drag story hour. Totally joyful!

I've read two versions of this book: the original illustrations of Diana Souza and the new version by Laura Cornell. While both do a wonderful job of portraying a vibrant little girl and her loving family, I have to say that I prefer the new version. The original had a more limited color pallet, likely due to printing cost concerns. The new version seems to have no such issue, resulting in a book that's more lifelike and enjoyable to child readers.

This book is careful to include depictions of children from many different ethnic groups, making it a fairly realistic reflection of an actual classroom. Though I do note that there are no differently-abled children portrayed.

Overall, this is just a fun book, and it does a great job introducing the idea of different kinds of families. I'd suggest pairing it with "Stella Brings the Family," for a family with two fathers, and also books on adoption. Of course, there's so many kinds of families, the list could go on for a LONG time, so figure out what's represented in your classroom and try to find books that make a point of not focusing on just one variant of family.

This books is interesting to children, allows children to open their minds, is age-appropriate (K-3), and has a child-like language. It does not contain a thick plot, nor a problem and solution.

The illustrations are accurate and pleasing to look at and correspond to the text. They also are interesting and enhance the story.

The characters in the story are mostly all white, so they do not represent a variety of cultural groups. However, the children in the story are exposed to different types of families at the end. There are no negative stereotypes, and the character's lifestyles are realistic. However, again, there is not much diversity. This is a fictional children's picture book.

This book is a great example of how a teacher can incorportate varying families in the classroom! It can also be a part of a larger lesson plan regarding "my family," which can teach students of all the different types of families. It covers the topics of both gay marriage and adoption. Heather Has Two Mommies gives positive examples of a welcoming community that surrounds non-nuclear families. I definitely recommend and love!
