elhaaim's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 48%

I really tried to push through this book; I really wanted to finish it. But I kept putting it down and reluctantly picking it back up again. Unfortunately, this book made me realize I don't really like trials as a plot device and the writing really threw me off. Even though it is in third person, the narration is too much telling and not enough showing.  A lot of extra, unnecessary detail about the character's movements during dialogue scenes. A lot of the FMC thinking in her head that her feelings toward the MMC is changing, and less of actually showing it through their behavior as to why this is happening. It seemed to be their feelings are a result of divine intervention than actually the significance of their character.

It read very much like a YA novel, and I wanted to look forward to the second book because of how it's marketed. Unfortunately, I just feel like the author put a solid effort into marketing it in the perfect Social Media way, and I just don't feel like the quality of the book lived up to it. Like many reviewers said, however, I was a big fan of the concept that the typical gender tropes were flipped. I would love to see more books take this on. It just wasn't well executed in the way that I had hoped.

If you wanna read something that is in the same veins as the classic/popular Fae romantasy vibes, but with tropes that are flipped on their heads, read this. There is a much more diverse number of cool fantasy races in here as well, recognizably similar to D&D races, and I enjoyed that aspect! This book took me through the full range of emotions. Kicking my feet from excitement, kicking my feet from banter, kicking my feet in anger, kicking my feet while crying, etc etc. You get it. Something about it all felt like a video game to me in terms of pacing and action and adventure, which as a gamer, was awesome. I think this would make a great anime/cartoon, similarly to Avatar:TLA. I love everything about this book except
the final chapter doing the classic “show the reader the secret that the characters don’t know and make them suffer through watching them try to figure it out in the next book” trope lol I would rather have been left in the dark alongside the characters. I enjoy a good twist, a good blindside.

Pay attention to the little details in the pictures on the chapters… I appreciate the attention to detail put into them throughout the book :)
