I actually really enjoyed this. It's of course too long (typical for one of these serialized novels, especially if you're not reading it in the same way) and it's old, but I thought it was absolutely hilarious at times how foolish/irresponsible the musketeers were (making enemies left and right). This is classic comedy and not much more than that, but it doesn't have to be.
Surprisingly (maybe not, given the inclusion of lesbians in The Count of Monte Cristo), this passes the Bechdel test. Milady is the master of gaslight gatekeep girlboss. Iconic.

Finally finished with this novel and jeez was it a battle for me.
This had a lot of potential and I really thought I would enjoy it after loving Count of Monte Cristo, and after reading the first third of the book, I thought it wasn't going to be as good as Monte Cristo but still a decent read. By the end it felt like I was beating my head against a wall to finish.
I really enjoyed D'Artagnan and the three Musketeer; their early relationship and banter, but I never got to the point of really connecting with the characters. At most I enjoyed Athos, but even so, only marginally so.
The humor was good, but started to get lost in the endless conversations that started to drag on. By the time we were with Milady in England I was frustrated with the pace. Also, it all of a sudden became very hard on women. Wow, I never realized that even woman thought they were so weak back then! *rolls eyes* I remember a bit of this blatant sexism in Monte Cristo, and being a History major, I understand that this is written in a different time and women were treated very differently, but it still gets tiresome when just about every page starts to mentions how weak women are. Okay Dumas, we get it! Please move on with the story. Was it supposed to be ironic because of Milady's abilities?
I felt the end was underwhelming. The whole book took forever to explain everything that was going on minute by minute, but then all of a sudden it's tired of explaining, here's a brief sentence of what happens to each character, and done. Wait what?!
After reading this I'm quite surprised that the Three Musketeers is so much more popular than Monte Cristo. If you have read neither, you should know by now which one I would recommend.
Maybe in a few years I'll try reading Dumas again. If I do though, it will likely be just to reread Count of Monte Cristo.

C'est excessivement long évidemment.

This was a book I found highly entertaining, easy to follow, never boring, yet not nearly as profound nor as captivating (read that: thought-provoking) as The Count of Monte-Cristo, and hence, not a book I would purchase to keep at home.
I listened to the book via LibreVox, and the reader was good, except for the fact that, I really hate to say it, I literally had to grit my teeth through the mercifully few sections where she sang (sorry, some folks just do not have good singing voices, and this reader was one of them). But apart from that, the listening experience was ok, saving me the time of reading since I can listen as I clean, cook, eat, and clean.
