This book, while a classic, is about 100 pages too long. There's a whole section toward the end that has little to do with the title characters and seemed an overwrought plot device. That aside, there were several sections that were the swashbuckling adventure that were the reason I picked up the book. But, Dumas could've used an editor.

I read the book because everybody always refers to the "Three Musketeers" when talking about friends that are really close. Guess what?! There are FOUR main characters! Three are Musketeers and the 4th is a younger fellow who wants to be a Musketeer. It was a pretty good book - just like Monte Christo, Alexandre Dumas does a good job of keeping his characters interesting. Unlike Monte Cristo, this one was not nearly so dark & depressing. The last 150 pages or so kept me really enticed. I don't know if it's a book I'd re-read it but it was a fun story to follow.

This is probably the one single book that I've read and re-read for the most times! (I've also read Twenty Years After quite a few times and adored it, although the last one in the trilogy is rather not to my liking)

Being one of the first books that I've read and loved, it was THE book that cultivated my love of story and literature, of the adventures of a different kind. Being now a very different, and much more developed person than the kid who first opened an abridged version of this fiction ten or twenty years ago, at the beginning of this re-read, there was a moment when I was worried that this book would not hold up for me, that it was all a nostalgia -- for it was a novel from a different time, of a time which is so much different from ours. But what a journey, what an experience! Not surprisingly, I do remember from time to time that I used to have different feeling, or simpler readings regarding some passages or descriptions, which, however, does not extinguish the pleasure of reading this wonderful tale at all. Reading this book still very much excites joy and wonder in me, as well as sorrow and terror. And I love every bit of it. I almost felt sad at the last chapter, that this journey of these characters of friends whom I adore so much, had to come to an end.

There are so much I can say about this book, so much I can say about what I love about it and why I love it.

More than ten years later, this still holds as one of my favorite book of all time, ever.

Much easier to read than I expected from its length! Very enjoyable.

SpoilerThe execution and poisoning at the end kind of surprised me. It seemed very dark compared to the rest of the book. I'm not sure any other result for Milady would have been satisfying, though.
Also, the title of the book is very misleading!

Divno. Avantura, romantika, historija, politika, kavaljerstvo. Sve je tu.

This should be a classic on everyone's reading list. I cannot express how much fun it was to read this book. There were many over the top moments, but that was certainly part of the charm. It was also apparent that this was serialized and I could just imagine what it must have been like to wait for upcoming installments in the published paper.

I always wondered why the movie adaptations of this novel were so flamboyant and now I know; because that was how it was written!

I also had an opportunity to do a little fact checking along the way, because there were some obviously romanticized events. It stayed true to the historical characters and only embellished to the point of making a remarkable story. The Duke of Buckingham is real. Felton is real. The event is real. The lead up is romanticized. Lots of fun!

I would like to get a leather bound edition of this novel for the bookcase. My hardcover copy is not as strong of spine as it once was and this is a story worth having on the shelves as it is a reflection of the things I enjoy. A soap opera in literary form!

I'll be reading the Count of Monte Cristo in the future. Interested to see what comes of that...

I really enjoyed this classic tale of the kings musketeers and england and france at war. I was a big fan of the cartoon series Dogtanian and the Muskahounds, any 80's babies will hopefully remember this? Deserves its "classic" title in my opinion, and thoroughly enjoyed the adventures.
