[ Reto lector marzo 2018: un clásico literario. ]

The stars are for the art, which I loved and is wonderful, but the text is... well maybe it was impossible to condense and simplify The Three Musketeers novel into a picture book, but I don't think having telling it in 1st person from d'Artagnan's POV helped matters. This rushed from important plot moment to important plot moment and by the end I just felt a sense of 'what even happened'?

I have tried to read this book many times when I finally decided to try it as an audiobook instead. This helped a lot as I wasn’t falling asleep while reading the opening chapter but it didn’t make it much more enjoyable. I know that movie adaptations, how I first learned the story, can be misleading but this was epically true for this story. There seemed to have been no redeeming qualities for any of them and the saying “all for one and one for all” was just for this group of four, not the musketeers collectively. I loved and hated Lady de Winter as there was more to her than I’d imagined and it was deliciously selfish.
Moderate: Death, Violence, War
It's not a profound book, but at about 175 years old, there is a reason you have heard of if: it's swashbuckling good fun!
This could have been easily separated into at least 3 other books, and you'd have a good YA series. I really disliked the whole sections about 7/8 the way through the book on Day 1,2,3,4 of Imprisonment, etc. Impossibly slow and just kills and ruins the pacing, and incredibly unbelievable (or were people really that gullible back then, which I am thinking maybe they were). But, ugh, those chapters are why it was downgraded from 5 to 4 stars (and almost down to 3 stars, it's that bad). The women (and, well, many of the characters) in the book are vapid, doe-eyed simpletons, excepting the primary villain.
The other nit is the title of the book. There are dozens of musketeers, both for king and cardinal. D'Artagnan himself becomes a musketeer about 2/3 the way through book, so even if you only count the close friends, it should be the Four Musketeers.
But, mostly, don't expect subtle truths and deep meaning, it's fun.

Please dont read this, watch the bbc show instead
I was surprised by how much more I enjoyed this than the Count of Monte Cristo. I liked the characters a lot more, and the political intrigue is really interesting.

full of ups and downs, yet very realistic and hopeful. The camaraderie between D’Artagnan and the three musketeers is joyous and very touching. It is unpredictable yet full of comfort. The antagonist have a full formed character and its really a very adventurous book which connect to the reader.
