My experience of The Three Musketeers, prior to reading this book, was limited to a ridiculous 90's adaptation, a ludicrous 10's adaptation, a television adaptation where Cardinal Richelieu becomes a Time Lord, and a candy bar which, all in all, is possibly the craziest adaptation of all. All of these, I have enjoyed.
The original-or close, as this is a translation-has surpassed them all for me. This book, while containing some of the beats I'd seen in the past, was also markedly different. It is easy to see why it is a classic.
I enjoyed this book via Audible, and I found myself once again being narrated to by one Simon Vance. I cannot speak to other audiobook adaptations (there were several to choose from on Audible alone), but this one I can recommend as Mr. Vance is a talent.
This is a story full of drama, comedy and absurdity, though it was a story utterly devoid of nougat. What it may lack in his last it makes up for in quite unbelievable actions throughout.
If you are late to this party as I have been, I would recommend you come at once. You won't regret it!

Why, have a lunch in an open field where the enemy might-and will-fire upon you so that you can have a clandestine conversation? Why not?If you are late to this party as I have been, I would recommend you come at once. You won't regret it!
Oh so much better then that Chris O'donnell (sp?) movie. Quite a bit of history from time to time, but overall a great read. A classic that is also a page turner. I really recommend it
Starts incredible, set me up for something of an adventurous Don Quixote, but as it went on my passion for it waned and it just became ‘yeah this is good’ because it was pretty average. I’ve read only on other Dumas book and it’s the same— first few hundred pages are really great but then it bogs itself down
I love Dumas! I had only read the Count of Monte Cristo and did not thought the 3 musketeers could top it, but it did.
Something that caught my attention from the start was each chapter's independence from the rest of the book, which is the product of it's publication as a serial in a newspaper. Each chapter has its own goal as well as a major goal for the entire book.
The Three Musketeers is d'artganan's journey into becoming one and his developing friendship between him and the three inseparables (Athos, Aramis & Porthos). Each of the musketeers & D'artagnan have their own personality, something that distinguish them from the other three.
The book is full of fights, comedy and romance all times four.
The Three Musketeers was an enjoyable read. The heroes are perhaps less likeable than adaptations would have you expecting, but they still have their good points to them. It has a lot more depth than I was expecting with regards the whole political powerplay aspects, and a surprisingly bittersweet ending.

It is by his courage alone, that a gentleman makes his way nowadays.

Love is the most selfish of all our passions.

You must conceal carefully whatever wounds you have. Silence is the last enjoyment of the unfortunate; let none know your grief; the curious would call up your tears, as insects suck the life-blood of a wounded deer.
The noble and distinguished air (...) flashes of dignity (...) the cloud in which he had voluntarily enveloped himself (...) that unalterable equanimity of temper, which made him the best companion in the world (...)

The heart of the kindest woman is pitiless towards a rival's pains.
