More like 1.5 ⭐️ but rounded up.
This debut had a good premise but lacked any (good) plot.
Good on the author to try and bring disability visibility to the world but it seems the only impact it has on it is how Vasalie has a constant internal monologue of “I can’t do this, I’m out of breath, etc” and then does everything all the same, but feels dizzy at the end.
The plot is obvious, the twists are predictable, and the romance is very dubious. I think it tries to have two romantic interests, but the chemistry was so lacking that I only realised it was trying to imply romance/lust when something actually happened, and even then I felt confused.
The villains were the most interesting part but only because they are stereotypical bad guys so it’s really easy to hate them.
A shame that the characters lacked any personality because I was intrigued enough to keep reading, and it sets up everything for a sequel, but I’m definitely not interested in continuing this.

DNF'd at 62%.
It's an odd choice to market a book as having disability rep and never actually reference the disability or have it impact the character in any way. Vasalie's (fmc) limitations from her imprisonment were quickly pushed to the side and buried, which felt very unrealistic.
Otherwise, this is just trope-heavy romantic fantasy at its core, and unfortunately, it's just not interesting enough for me to care.

Not bad for a romantasy debut. Didn’t care much for the fmc, so all three stars for my guy Anton who was doing the most

Got this as an ARC from Emerald City Comic Con!
Overall pretty good story. It gave me a darker version of Throne of Glass. I enjoyed that the chronic pain was something constantly in the story and not just a side note. You really felt the struggle the character had with her journey and that made her victories all the sweeter. I would say most of them were bittersweet, poor MC did not catch a break yet. Seems to be a series so hopefully the future holds more happiness for her.
I did struggle with her connections to others. I think all of them would have benefited on more time to flesh out all relationships. Vas’s relationship with her stepmother was definitely the most powerful and I wish more of the characters were given the chance to develop their relationships too.
Overall, loved the idea and enjoyed the read!

I knew I was going to love this story from the first chapter - this was a breath of fresh air for fantasy romance. A different take on royal scandals and prophecies - a dancer forced to become someone she despises to save those she loves and honour the memory of the only parental figure who had loved her for her. The twists and turns this story took kept me reading and kept me enthralled, I had to know what was going to happen at the last word of each chapter and it’s refreshing for our lovers not to get their happy ever after - yet?! I hope to Morta that there is a book 2 on the very near horizon as I need to be back with these characters and watch the two get their happiness and comfort back.
