What a devastating read. Reading it now, while a genocide is taking place against Palestinians, is especially heartbreaking. I had to take breaks in between my reading sessions, both because the sadness of the story got overwhelming with incessant real-life news of Palestinians being massacred, but also to absorb the beautiful writing.
The author tells us the story of a family, spanning multiple generations, set a few years before the creation of Israel and ending in 2002, during the Second Intifada.
The writing is so poetic. You can feel the Palestinians' deep connection to their land, and their longing for an ordinary life.
My favourite character was Dalia. All the characters' stories are tragic, but somehow Dalia's story hurt me the most and I can't stop thinking about her.
Also we get real, historical facts throughout the story. If you ever wondered about whether the Palestinian-Israeli is actually an extremely complex conflict, and you're a bit reluctant to read big fat history books (like me), I'd say this novel is a great place to start. The way the Palestinians have been dehumanised throughout history is honestly appalling and terribly unfair.

I had no clue about the horrors the Palestinians faced by the Zionists. I doubt much of the world does. This book educated me through the heartbreaking story of a family that struggles to survive. The author presents life lessons that any person could benefit from. It is an exquisite book.
