It was not the type of books I usually read but it opened my view of this world and how people treat each other. The complex life of David was really well planned out to emphasise the reckless and unnecessary hate between the Palastenians and Isrealis. I didn't really like some descriptions though and they did make me laugh during emotional parts of the book. For example: "... and I have never wanted to be a fish so badly" or something along those lines. Or another is: "... I have never bee 'n so glad to be fat".

Eventhough this book was based on a true story and the relationship and full circle moments with Amal becoming Dalia was heart breaking, I did find this book a bit boring at times, for example when she was at the boarding house. That, however, didn't stop me from crying at the end.

"How was it that a man could not walk onto his own property, visit the grave of his wife, eat the fruits of forty generations of his ancestors' toil, without mortal consequences?"

I am at a loss for words for this heart-wrenching masterpiece I have just finished. Every word, every page made me feel emotional and felt like a lesson. I think it's impossible not to cry while reading it; it's a never-ending rollercoaster of emotions. I went from sad, to excited, to scared, to hopeful... but not once did I wonder where the story was going. I never lost my way because of the author's beautiful poetic writing.

Generations and fates of the characters intertwine beautifully throughout the book. The mix between reality and fiction is seamless and mastered, and it really sheds light on what Palestinians have been going through since the Nakba and still today. Reading this book felt like an experience. It pushed me to see beyond headlines and statistics, and to empathize with those who live through it. It made me understand the hard truth that people like Fatima, Aisha, and Majid can be the cost of conflict.

I felt transported into their world, felt like I lived in this refugee camp with young Amal and Huda, that I followed Huda to the US and lived with Yousef in Lebanon. I lived in Palestine each time I opened the book, and I felt every word, every moment in my soul.

I will never stop recommending this book to everyone I know from now on. I want everyone to have the chance to experience this masterpiece like I did.

I don't remember the last time I was so deeply touched by a book, but it makes me realize why I love reading. For this exact reason. So thank you, Ms. Abulhawa.

3.5?

I had this book sitting on my shelf for years. I finally picked it up after a few weeks of Gaza being bombarded, needing to connect to Palestinians in another way besides seeing their pain on my phone screen.

This book is an important read no matter how well versed you are on Palestinian history. Beautiful words from Abulhawa that show the humanity, love and passion Palestinians possess that mainstream media often mutes or ignores.

Wow. Such a heartbreaking book, but so deeply important to the amplification of Palestinian experiences & injustice at the hands of Israel. A read worth every single tear, which I could not step shedding. I cannot get over the stories of cavernous love amongst such tragedy and heartbreak, which Abulhawa relays so so vividly. The world needs to know the truth, historically and in present-day. I recommend this book over and over.

May we get to see a free Palestine.
