Rejected is book one in the Shadow Beast Shifters series by Jaymin Eve.
This is my first taste of Author Jaymin Eve. I picked up this book; because of the review I read by Between Dreams and Reality.
Dark. Gritty.
I wasn’t sure what to make of this story. It’s got some hard core emotional abuse going on with the pack our heroine is in. It’s not your typical pack life. These guys and girls have let darkness in. I’m used to reading about packs that help and support their members with maybe a few bad apples that then get rooted out.
Then we have the true mate aspect and of course Mera is rejected; which sends her into a tailspin and onto a different path in life, one that will help her find her true destiny.
Lots of aspects in the story repeat. Lots of emotional abuse. Lots of alpha a holes. Yet, I read the whole thing and started reading book two. There was something that captured me. I think what got me was Mera who doesn’t let the world, the abuse, and the alpha men in her life get her down. She fights, she rises up, and she becomes something stronger.
Their’s a mystery behind Mera to discover; besides the overall ARC that plays out in the first three books in this series.
Last, we do end on a cliffhanger, but the next book is out so you don’t have to wait to find out what happens next. Also that cover, just Hawt. Love it!
Rejected is not my usual read and very different from what I’m used to, but it had some elements that I enjoyed.
Rated: 3 Stars

Not what I expected, but in the best way. I went into this thinking it was just another shifter romance novel and found something much more magical!
After Mera’s father challenged the alpha and lost, therefore losing his life, she has been abused by her pack for half her life due to his choices. Her 22nd birthday arrives which means she finally gets her wolf! On the night of her first shift, she discovers her fated mate is the alphas son but he rejects her. In Mera’s grief, she accidentally calls on the shadow realm and Shadow Beast, who all shifters worship and also fear.
Mera is taken away by the Shadow Beast as he now needs her ability to access the shadow realm as it’s been sealed for thousands of years, until Mera somehow opened it for a split second. Yet she has no idea how she did it.
This is a paranormal forced proximity romance and I can definitely see some Stockholm Syndrome happening in this series

I?m a sucker for good world building and this story ticks all the boxes. I love the tension between Beast and Mera and I appreciate the slow burn of it. I will say, Mera?s personality was a bit grating in the beginning but I loved her strength and the sex positivity/body positivity messages of her loving her body. I?d 100% give up my current life to live in that library.
Not what I expected
I was expecting a romance novel but this was great! Not enough smut but still an amazing story! Worth my time!

TW: Bullying
This book is not for everyone and that is ok. I came into this know the general plot of the book, and that was enough to pique my interest. To start off, I loved Mera’s wit and sarcasm. The things you usually say in your head, comes out both in Mera’s internal and external dialogue. She also cusses a lot, which I did t mind, cause it felt natural given Mera’s background. She’s survived a somewhat traumatic childhood and need to curate a hardened exterior to survive.
Some parts of this book felt extremely repetitive, and the pacing felt a tad slow, but wow did it pick up in the end. All in all, this first book did what it needed to do to make me invested enough to read book two to see what happens next.

This book is not good. I forced myself to finish it because it was recommended but I want those 4 hours back.
Every single character in this book flashes hot and cold for no reason. All of the bad guys and honestly even the good guys are horrible to the MC for basically no reason. The motivational justifications never seems to match the severity of the actions they're taking. There is a lot of telling-not-showing in this book.
The MC is constantly throwing weird tantrums because she is "so angry, nobody understands how hard it is to be her" and the MMC is a dick to her but she really wants to bone him because he has a tattoo? WTF? How am I supposed to get behind this?
The world build is also incredibly confusing... like a bad rip-off of the Fever series maybe? And I can't get over the forced self-insertion from the author... it's irrelevant to the rest of the story that the MC loves reading indie romance novels but it is brought up multiple times.
Be smarter than me. Don't waste your time on this one.

This book has it all....
Strong characters, great story, action, heartache, and slow burn. It was a great read with a cliffhanger I never saw coming! Looking forward to book 2.
