This was really good but not as good as the other books if I’m honest. The ending was…. Not as satisfactory
Edit: just finished reading this for the second time. This is better the second go around. I’m super excited for the next one!!

I did enjoy this, but …
1. I spent a lot of time thinking about how much personal experience Rowling was putting into it, and it was honestly distracting. Kept me from just sinking into the world.
2. It was too long. I was never bored, really, but nothing important happened for a very long time. It did not need to be that long.
3. Strike and Robin were boring. It really seems like there should be more progress in the will they/won’t they by now.
4. I didn’t buy Strike’s guess on the murderer. There were no other clues that should have pointed us to him, except maybe the Beatles, but that’s pretty weak. The other times we interacted with him still don’t line up with the outcome.
That said, I thought the fandom Rowling built was pretty impressive. It kind of tapered off toward the end, but when it was a bigger part of the story, I thought that aspect was really well done.

The Ink Black Heart is a You Tube series sensation but when the creator is murdered and her co-creator seriously maimed, the are multiple suspects. Robin had met the worried young woman a couple weeks prior but was unable to help at the time. When they are called on to investigate the murder, the discover a whole online world devoted to the series and the online game it inspired.
I’ve been enjoying this series a lot, but this installment was just meh for me. I loved Troubled Blood so this was a bit of a let down. It was just too convoluted, too long and too many characters plus their online personas. And I’m seriously tired of Strike and Robin’s will they or won’t they relationship. Can’t they just be friends and colleagues?
I read this on audiobook and I love narrator Robert Glenister. I could listen to him read the phone book but even he wasn’t enough this time.
