I’m convinced that Jay Kristoff is an actual genius. A legitimate genius. A cruel genius but a genuis non the less. These books were such a rollercoaster! Anyone pondering whether to read these books, do it. Start now. Today. You will feel better for it.
I just finished this book and I’m actually exhausted. Weird right considering I am giving it four stars? Well let me explain. I actually did love it for the most part but I just really don’t like Ashlinn and the ending was not what I expected. I was expecting something shocking, a twist we wouldn’t have ever guessed, a sad ending or even a real fucked up one. I was NOT expecting cute and romantic and it just did not suit. Don’t get me wrong, I love JK and he is hands down one of my favourite authors but one of the reasons I love him so much is the unpredictability and this ending was predictable and also, I hate to say it, kind of boring.
I LOVED all the footnotes and also the twist of Mercurio finding the Nevernight Chronicles in the library, that was such a highlight for me and I thought that was really clever writing by JK. Cloud was amazing and I loved getting to know Jonnen better, what a cool kid! Seeing him slowly warming up to Mia was so heartwarming.
The hardest part of this book for me was Eclipse dying (fucking sad and horrific) and Tric killing himself to get Ashlinn back to “make Mia happy” ugh no thanks. Also Adonai dying was not cool, I know he was a weirdo but I was a big fan of him. I do not forgive, Mister Kristoff.

Every good book starts with a quest for revenge and ends with trying to kill god, right?

I can’t remember the last time I was this happy to be done with a book. I’m going to be honest, I skimmed the last 100 pages because I was SO over this.
1. “The many were one” makes absolutely no sense. The pieces of the Anai’s soul need to be one for the moon to be reborn. So why leave half of the soul under gods grave for Scaeva to take? I know it was corrupt, but Mia would have had to take it at some point if we’re going based off this prophecy. How does Jonnen get to live if he has a piece of Anai’s soul? Was Mia just going to murder Scaeva and then kill herself…like what was miss girls plan?
2. Half of the plot makes zero sense and so many of the plot twists are way to convenient. Yes this is fantasy, but you still need to follow some level of rules within the world you create. Like I said on my review for the last book, I feel like Kristoff just writes himself into a corner and ends up writing the most outlandish storylines to make it all come together. It doesn’t feel planned out at all. Characters coming back from the dead, Mia shadow walking across the OCEAN because it’s a little cloudy….come on.
3. Every other review mentions it, but I hated it so much that I can’t leave it out. Writing about your books within your books, and including the negative reviews about them, is so pretentious and weird.
4. Ash. One of the only moments I felt joy in this books was when she got killed. (unfortunately that didn’t even last)
5. Look, I love some smut in my books. But there is a time and a place for it, and Kristoff obviously does not know when that is.
6. The ending of this was SO WEAK. Is Mia dead? Is she alive and Ash is dead?? It doesn’t really matter to me but you can’t convince me the girl who leveled an entire city to (partly) save her brother, would choose to spend her life in a cottage with her lover instead of going to be with him.
7. “Her knee collided with his groin the way falling comets kiss the earth” what the fuck does that even mean. I can guarantee you this isn’t even the worst one, but I vividly remember having to put the book down after this.
There’s a million other things I didn’t like about this book, but honestly I’m tired of thinking about it. This entire series was so disappointing. At least I can confidently say I am not a fan of Kristoff or his writing.

No.
Proprio no.
E sono triste per questo.
Il primo era così bello!
Poi il secondo meh.
Questo tanta noia. Servivano tutte e 524 le pagine?
Ma in sostanza io e questa saga non ci siamo prese o capite. Non mi ha sorpreso mai.

Wow, I loved this series. While it took a bit to get into and was easier on audio I truly enjoyed the ride and the emotions you get from it will definitely take you on a ride. I knew I loved Jay, simply from Illuminae and his Instagram but I will read/buy anything he tells me to.
Another series checked off for me in 2020!

Look, I REALLY loved the other two books in the series but this one just wasn’t the five-star read that the others were. There’s just... too much. Too many plot elements. Pirates and assassins and gladiators and sea creatures and raging gods and goddesses and familiars.
It all played together well enough in the first book - it was dark, it had a bit of a theme but not too much: assassin school, shadow-religion, the rising of a dictatorship, some magical sort of elements. Okay. That’s cool.
The second book was... a stretch, but fine I’ll run with it. All of the above but let’s add in an element of captivity, and uh, gladiators (sure, fine, let’s go there) and a sexy sexy girl on girl relationship (here for it).
The third one though. Okay. So all of the above, and let’s have a um... ghost/zombie(?), pirates, sea creatures, a snot-nosed cranky brother and just honestly, it’s feeling claustrophobic and inorganic. I liked the focus when it was the assassin school way more.
I love Kristoff’s potty-mouthed writing style and appreciate the level of care in this story but getting to the end was a haul. I didn’t feel like this book had enough satisfying plot twists like the other two did. More just... gratuitous settings and trying to tie up character stories. It was aight. I mean, it still gets 3 stars because his books are that badass.

This series had great potential but is drastically overshadowed by the abundance of sex scenes. Book 2 is the best of the 3 however book 3 is a stark departure from the writing style of 1 & 2. Personally, I am not a fan of reading romance or smut. There are sex scenes in all 3 books of this series except book 3 contains way more of these scenes and in my opinion, none of them were necessary. However this made me increasingly uncomfortable to read through these scenes as the main characters are minors and the writer is an adult male. The graphic detail of the sex scenes detracts from
the overall plot and the character arcs. The author has been criticized for writing sex scenes about minors and it seems like book 3 is a middle finger to the critics with the sheer volume of sex scenes written in. Book 3 is more of a romance story than it is action / fantasy. The dry humor that was prevalent in book 1 and book 2 seemingly disappears in book 3 as Kristoff all but eliminates his snarky footnotes. If you are going to read the series, perhaps stop at book 2 and only read the final pages of book 3 to see how it gets wrapped up.
