4/5. Solid Batman story, and you can see why it was so revolutionary when it came out. Probably not as impactful nowadays especially to a first time reader, but still worth picking up!

How exciting it must have been to read this comic book off the stands when it first came out ! Beyond being a classic street-level Batman tale, Year One was the promise of a rebirth, a total revamp of the universe of the caped crusader. A promise made to the avid comic-book readers that loved "The Dark Knight Returns", which certainly was a good surprise. And a much darker take on Batman.
I expected the book to be longer, and I wanted Frank Miller to be more explorative of the the Gordon/Batman relationship but I enjoyed Year One greatly.

The first in Frank Miller’s Batman series. This is the first Batman graphic novel/comic I have read, but from the storyline and others opinions, it appears to be the Batman series that relates most closely with the newest movie series.

Batman: Year One focuses on the beginning of Bruce Wayne as Batman, but the focus is more on Gordon than on Batman himself, as Gordon tries to solve crimes and catch the new masked avenger. The ending is much like the ending of the film, Batman Begins, and there are many similarities.

I have another in the series that I am looking forward to reading, but I’m not quite sure the exact order they are supposed to be in, so hopefully there will not be any confusion.

This was a great introduction to Batman, from the eyes of great creator.

Read this as a podcast I'm listening to, Screw It, We're Just Gonna Talk About Comics, is currently discussing it. I haven't read a lot of Batman comics, but hosts, [a:Will Hines|3342295|Will Hines|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1468766402p2/3342295.jpg] and his brother Kevin, both said it's one of the best graphic novels ever.

Strangely enough, this story arc wasn't a big marquee event—it just was released as issues 404–407 of the regular "Batman" line in 1987. [a:Frank Miller|15085|Frank Miller|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1335457016p2/15085.jpg] and [a:David Mazzuchelli|17895837|David Mazzuchelli|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] took us back to the first year of Bruce Wayne & Jim Gordon fighting crime in Gotham City—Wayne has returned after a dozen years of training and Gordon has transferred from Chicago. Both realize the town is filled with evil & corruption and both use their own methods to fight back.

The Batman origin story is tried and true but I, for one, have not ever known much about Gordon's backstory (beyond a few mentions of his family on film). Miller did a great job making Gordon, not only the one good cop in all of Gotham, but also a well-trained fighter himself. Plus, Miller doesn't keep his "hero cop" squeaky clean; Gordon has his own faults (which I won't spoil here).

Mazzuchelli's artwork is gorgeous—there are several panels I stared at for minutes just to take in all the details he created. Plus, the juxtaposition of his art against Miller's writing was just breathtaking at times:
