Fletcher had only been writing solo plays a short while but this one really works. A sort of sequel to The Taming of the Shrew, it shows a calm and intelligent woman dealing with the power imbalance in marriage and arrive at something very close to a companionate relationship. Sub-plots explore other aspects of marital relationships, and the routine misogyny of Early Modern comedy is much more restrained than usual. Very enjoyable.

I'm taking an Early Feminisms class with Dr. Daileader, one of the editors of this edition. She's great, the play is great, read the book.

What a bawdy play! I thought it was funny and clever, and definitely a good response to The Taming of the Shrew.
