Chloe Neill's backlist just isn't for me. I hoped I'd enjoy her paranormal series since her supernatural stuff didn't do it for me, but alas. The setting has a vaguely post-apocalyptic, dystopian feel, but doesn't feel rooted in actual history. While I read only few chapters, at least 80% of all that content were long-winded infodumps.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get into this book. The plot was okay, but everything felt very slow and the usual quirks that come with the setting (like Chicago in Neill’s other series) just weren’t working/drawing me in. I wasn’t that interested in any of the characters and I feel like the story didn’t really move anything on that much, especially in terms of the protagonist’s development. The climax of the novel where Claire is doing the stuff with the Veil felt very anti-climatic and I cringed at Liam calling her ‘baby’ as it was so out of the blue and just ugh. Overall, this book was nothing like I expected it to be and I found it disappointing.

I love Chloe Neil and anything she writes. It was a great start to a cool new series. LOVE IT!

Enjoyable enough but nothing that stands out. I found it a little slow to get into and actually started it a couple of times before finally finishing it. Mostly I think that is because as the first book in a series there was a lot of world building and character introduction. It did get more interesting as the book progresses and I would be interested to see where things go next.

I really liked this, good start and since I have the other 2 books, I'll be reading on. Chloe Neill is a solid writer and I like her Chicagoland books as well, I need to return to that series too now that I've finally bought the rest. I thought the story was a bit different and not so overdone. Wraiths are creepy and the world a bit dismal but this has sooo much story left to tell and I liked all the characters.

Sort of Jane Yellowrock/Kate Daniels levels of magic and action.

I got this book at SDCC and I have to say that it was a happy surprise. I really enjoyed this book it's been a while since I read a paranormal novel and I wasn't disappointed. I did have some issues with it but I did like the way the characters were written. I like that the main character Claire was a very strong character that didn't let herself be push around. I also enjoyed the supporting characters and the diversity in the characters. I really enjoyed the friendship in this novel also.

I REALLY enjoyed this book. I'm a huge fan of Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series, and I was worried I wouldn't like this one as much, but honestly I'd say I think I enjoyed it a little more than the first Chicagoland book. Her writing has definitely come a lot further since Some Girls Bite. This whole novel just feels a lot more put together and cohesive and satisfying.

Claire is so easy to relate to right off the bat. She's scared but she pulls it together when she knows she needs to. She is good under pressure and a quick-thinker. I haven't related this well to a main character in a while. She's smart and capable and doesn't tolerate b.s.

I loved that the potential love story plotline is just a super small side/background plot rather than taking up valuable space that the main plot should occupy. The conspiracy plotline was very clear but not easily guessable. There are still a lot of unanswered questions for sequels to address, but the front threat is addressed completely by the end of this book, so there isn't a giant cliffhanger (I despise cliffhangers).

I would highly recommend this book to fans of urban fantasy stories with a strong, relatable female protagonist, that are grounded in a very realistic setting. It's not super gritty or sexual, so for people that don't like typical urban fantasy this might be a good series for you to read something more your taste, but that's still in the genre.

I'd definitely recommend this to fans of the YA series Daughter of Smoke & Bone.
