There is a lot of interesting plot packed into this book, and Neill does not do it justice. The story line is fun and full of intrigue, but the whole thing feels rushed with little time for development of that intrigue or atmosphere. Neill does take time to repeatedly describe Liam Quinn's muscles, but it feels so matter of fact that it's not even fun. The physical descriptions are not subtle. In fact, nothing is subtle in this book.
This is a fun read, but the writing is mediocre at best. There are too many ideas here and not enough time paid to the plot points. The whole story takes place in under a week, during which the characters rarely sleep. I had trouble buying into the characters' responses and was distracted by all the loose ends.

yet they're still good to go to save the world at the end. And seriously? We're supposed to believe that Clare has super magic to relock all the seals under duress but can barely cast before that moment?Spoiler
like Phaedra immediately admitting she was one of the seven Sensitives even though keeping that secret is supposed to be vital to national securitySpoiler
I also never understood why cars and helicopters would be affected by electrical outages. I can drive my car in a blackout even though it's filled with electronics.
~ 3.5 The Veil Stars ~
The Veil is book one in Devil’s Isle series by Chloe Neill. It’s a satisfactory start for this new urban fantasy series; with a little espionage, treason, and saving the world.
The pace of the book was pretty steady throughout. The author is doing a lot of world set up and getting you ready for more. The world as a whole is unusual and unique. Things are not a hundred percent black and white, good vs. evil. The last 25% got to be the most exciting with everything coming to a close in needing to save the world.
The Veil did not stand out to me in any way. I was not blown away nor did the characters wow me. Claire was meh. Nothing about her personality stood out and the same goes for her friends. Also Clair’s character development was kind of a big leap from Sensitive to world-savior. She just did not have that kick-ass save the world thing going for me. Liam, her romantic interest, was also meh. He did not inspire alpha drooling over. As for their relationship, it did not feel very romantic. More like friends who are semi attracted to each other, so I’m currently not feeling them as a couple, if they do get together.
The Veil was an adequate read and I look forward to continue the series. If you enjoy reading Urban Fantasy and unique worlds, then you should give this one a try.

Enjoyable, although the characters weren't very interesting and our narrator in particular felt very generic. At various points felt like reading Kate Daniels Lite, but I will probably be continuing with the series.
3.5 stars
Post apocalyptic urban fantasy set in New Orleans with magic, faeries, and angels? Don't mind if I do!
Decently written (although a touch clunky and heavy handed in spots) with decent characters (who were only the slightest bits of cliche) and a decent amount of action (which was occasionally off pace.)
Overall it was a decent read.

Compelling characters, solid story and world building, didn't wrap every little thing up with a bow at the end(I actually love this). All round enjoyable, going to have to see what else this author has out there after I finish this series.
Not really sure why I'm reading another urban fantasy series in 2019...but this was fine. Not quite as charmed as I was by Neill's Chicago vampire series, but honestly I started reading that back in the heyday. This one is not vampires but fae. The characters felt meh, the setting felt meh, the action felt meh.

This book is great if you love New Orleans. The plot is a bit thin tho, which is a shame since it's a nice concept overall.
A 3.5 star book for me. It's an enjoyable urban fantasy tale, set in New Orleans in the aftermath of a magical war. Our main character is a pretty typical lead, who has hidden powers of her own but just wants a normal life, before she gets dragged into a battle beyond her control.
It isn't particularly deep or special but it held my attention.
