I just finished The Love Songs of W E.B Dubois and when I tell you this book is so powerful. There were times I wanted to throw this book, but as I closed this book all I could do was breathe and reflect.
Yes, at roughly 800 pages, it is, indeed, a mountain to climb, but the journey is engrossing. Sweeping back and forth across the years, Jeffers narration shifts skillfully to reflect the tenor of the times — from the shared legends of tribal people to the candid realism of the modern era.
I love the intentional intertwining of history. Though some pages were harder to digest without trigger warning, the more I read, the deeper the story, the deeper the roots.

What a great epic novel! It was a bit long and overly detailed in parts (like when describing child sex abuse) and then glossed over some things in others. I had trouble keeping the names and ancestors straight and had to look up a family tree. The “big reveal” was pretty lame, maybe because I don’t place such importance on blood relationships. Huge fan of Uncle Root. Ailey grew on me.
