This one is a little too dark for me right now. I might come back and finish it down the road.

OMG I think that this could be my best read of 2021. Everyone needs to read this. It's dystopian like Handmaids tale but then you have a Lord of the Flies type situation where normal people turn on each other and do nasty things. And the ending is totally not how you expect. I felt emotional on the last page. Looking back it's perfect but I still felt like screaming "NOOOO"

This is an interesting one to review, because having to keep in mind that it’s written for a YA audience pulls some weight. While reading, it did remind me of the Delirium series by Lauren Oliver that I read about a decade ago and loved. Using that as a barometer, I think 3⭐️ is where this sits.

Despite this being a 400-page book, some storylines felt rushed or maybe there were one too many characters that instead could’ve been blended together. There were some wild accusations about character integrity that were held with strong conviction with little supportive evidence, but that could just be how a 16-year-old thinks. Also, who knows what this says about me, but I would’ve loved more Kiersten content.

The Grace Year is an annual tradition in a small town, where 16-year-old girls are sent into the woods to accept and remove their magic. Once they’re pure, they return a year later either to their betrothed or work duty assignments.

Tierney is the middle child of five daughters who is determined to be free and not be a wife if she survives the tribulations of her year. She doesn’t believe that the girls hold magic and would rather focus on the survival skills her father taught her, even if that makes her stick out from the cult-like mentality of the group. Being an outcast for a year in the wilderness comes at a steep price, though.
