For some reason I was tentative about reading this, but JLA did it again I became so invested in these characters. I can't even function right now, full review later. That ending= THE FEELS even though I know Roth will be back in the next book.

3 Stars simply because of Bambi.
I first picked up this book at the beginning of the pandemic but was unable to get past the first sentence. Im not typically an urban fantasy reader so having a demon in McDonalds threw me for a loop. My friend Silka begged me to read past the first line and I finally listened to her. However, I am sad to report this is our first book disagreement.
Overall, this book was okay and I was intrigued mostly by the plot, but it wasn't my favourite. I've come to the conclusion JLA is not an author I will be reading more of.
Layla is a half demon, half warden with an interesting gift. She is able to see the souls of the people, demonic and wardens. With this unique ability, she is valuable to the wardens who guard the city from demonic activity. It is through Laylas tracking of demons that she meets a high level demon, Roth, determined to show Layla the truth of the world and the people she willingly serves. Now Layla is faced with a who new reality. Are the wardens really the guardians she always thought they were? And is she fighting for the right side?
The plot concept was very intriguing but it was the execution that got me.
The love aspect
Roth as a love interest I enjoyed. His comments were a nice addition to the story. I'm a romance reader so his romantic additions were welcomed.
What I didn't enjoy was JLA trying to make Zayne a potential love interest. He seemed very against it 99% of the time. This made it frustrating because I didn't see Zayne as a love interest and the BAM a tensioned filled moment comes from out of left field. Aside from that 1%, Layla and his relationship felt more brother, sister to me.

Wardens: gargoyle like characters who can shift into human form. They are responsible for keeping humans/the city safe from demonic activity
Layla:
- a half demon, half warden
- has the ability to see peoples souls. She also has the intense urge to feed on these souls.
- she lives with the wardens who protect the city in exchange for 'tagging' demons for them to kill
Roth
- upper level demon from hell
- is an attractive, dark haired "morally gray" love interest
-has a bunch of 'cute' pets
Zayne
- a warden
- very protective of Layla
- runs to daddy dearest whenever Layla does something
- annoying with his actions
Bambi
- this mammoth snake/demon creature that is also a tattoo -- I just loved it especially because she was named Bambi.
