I'm sorry, I think this is the worst JLA book yet. I just didn't get into it at all, and her characters were so freaking whinny. I LOVED Alex and Katy in her other series, but Layla was just so annoying. She was CONSTANTLY being rescued and her love interests just weren't interesting. The guys were pretty much hot, and that was it. Roth was the most interesting character, and I still didn't like him that much. The love triangle was annoying and so were most the characters. The plot was mildly interesting and unique but not interesting enough for me to keep reading.

First of all, I need to get off my chest, but that ending was not allowed!

Okay, now that is out of the way. I little bit of context. I discovered JLA with From blood and Ash and I am currently reading her entire backlist. I have read the Lux series, and book 1 of the Covenant series. Some people might think that some of these books are bound to resemble each other. But no, I think JLA always manages to create such unique worlds that you can’t help but be swept in. I mean demons and gargoyles is probably the most unheard of story and every time JLA manages to create characters that feel so real and so true.

Layla is an amazing character, she is funny and strong, and yet, she struggles with her nature and I couldn’t help but connect with her! And don’t get me started on Roth! He is just the best. He is arrogant, cocky, definitely has overconfidence issues, but he is hilarious and I think he challenges Layla to be a true self.

Anyway, I loved this book so much, I can’t wait to read the next two books and then the spin-off! (Yes, we have been blessed by JLA!)

Plot or Character Driven: Character

I love Jennifer's books; they are fun, and easy, and thoroughly entertaining. I normally enjoy the characters. While being predictable and sometimes super shallow, they're kinda real, and imperfect, and always make me laugh. But this one was just didn't do it.
The plot was interesting and some of the demons were downright scary, but the characters were too shallow, and too inconsistent. I took me a long time to feel anything for any of the three main characters and even after finishing I didn't feel attached or really excited like I normally do with her books. I liked it enough to read it and want to finish the series, but this one was definitely not to the standard of her other books!

I really enjoyed this book. Layla is such an interesting character that goes through so many challenges and learns about who she is. Her relationship with Zayne and then her relationship with Roth add to those challenges. I loved all the twists and turns that left me on the edge of my seat.I can’t wait to learn more about her story.

This book was suprisingly good. Yes the characters are slightly cliche and the storyline does have elements of 'been there, done that' but I really like it. The female lead Layla has a good character development. Roth is well written, sassy and interesting. Zayne is a bit more bland and somewhat infuriating in how he treats Layla but thats necessary to separate the male leads.

Would read again.
