I give this book 3.25 stars.
I wish I'd known the TV show was a book adaptation before watching it. Half the time, when I start a TV series I end up finding out it's based on a book that I haven't read yet ( Good Omens, Lockwood & Co, Umbrella Academy... ). I find this very annoying. I'm going to have to start Googling the TV series' name before watching it next time. I keep reminding myself of this and I keep forgetting.
Since I watched the TV show first, I am unfortunately less able to properly enjoy this book, because I keep comparing it to the TV show in my head. This is why I expected to catch little mentions of Lockwood glancing at Lucy with a look full of pining or something to that effect, because that is what happens very often in the TV show. Although I suppose since it's from Lucy's POV it's possible it DOES happen and that she's just very oblivious to it. That's exactly what I'd do. I barely notice when people act rude towards me, much less when they have crushes on me.
Also, I did not expect Lucy to dislike George so much. He seems much more likeable in the TV show than in the book.
I'm still glad that I found out about this series through the TV show since I don't usually read paranormal / urban fantasy novels. Not going to read book two straight away - my immediate TBR has several books I want to read beforehand, and I don't feel so attached to the characters and their storyline that I HAVE to find out what happens next.
For the most part I felt that the TV adaptation (apart for the last few episodes which I assume are part of book two's plot) didn't stray very far from the book, although it's been about six months since I've watched it and I don't remember everything.
I think the part I liked best was when the trio were in Combe Carey Hall (the very very haunted mansion. did I spell that right? my memory is very short-term). The first half of the book was a bit slower-paced, which was fine, as it was mostly supposed to introduce us to the world and its characters.
All in all, I enjoyed reading The Screaming Staircase, and I'll probably read book two before the end of the year. Read the book before watching the TV show.

Fun adventures in a dark and dangerous world. Jonathan Stroud writes teenagers who are quite emotionally mature for their age, but still believable in the intense situation they find themselves in. Mysteries gradually unveil themselves and I am eager for more.

Good book, but a better TV show. Such a pity it got canceled. Great cast, Persian character portrayal, etc.
