I totally get the hype surrounding this series now. I'm loving Cat and Bones!

Love this series - had to try the audio - I liked the narrator, but wasn't a huge fan of her Bones voice :) still - I enjoyed listening!
lighthearted mysterious fast-paced
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

SEXY !! In terms of this series, it's all downhill after this first installment, but man is this one worth it! As a rabid B*ffy fan, I found the borderline pl*gi*rism hilarious and enjoyable and this book fulfilled all my Spuffy fantasies without having to troll AO3.

3.5 Interesting first book. Overall I liked it, but seemed a little slut shamey at points. I'll probably read more of the series at some point.

In my search for a new PNR series to gobble down, I came across the work of Jeanine Frost (who came highly recommended by Ilona Andrews) and decided to give her first series a try.

This book was first published in the mid 2000's, and it did show its age a little. Published in the midst of the Twilight vampire phase, the heroine seems to be a "Mary Sue" - a hard-headed and sometimes foolish girl who ultimately ends up winning out in the end. Admittedly, Cat is relatively young in this book and has a lot to explore in the world outside the sphere of her overbearing and vengeance-driven mother.

Bones (the vampire hero) was the best part of this book. Who doesn't love a sexy, snarky, vampire boyfriend? For someone who was a few hundred years old, he was very much with the times with platinum died hair and lingo to keep up with all the college-aged kids. While I can understand his initial attraction to the heroine (she is, after all, a bad ass vampire hunter), the continuation of their relationship got a little stale throughout the book because she continues to act in childish ways. I find it hard to believe a vampire of multiple centuries would find such silly actions attractive - but I guess I'm not really in Bones' head so I can't say what his motivations are.

While the main focus (for me at least) is the romance, there is plenty of action and a decent plot to carry on the clear air between the steamy scenes. Having a vampire that is also a vampire bounty hunter is a somewhat unique trope to me which makes up for the vampire/vampire hunter relationship which has become a bit more common.

The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I did immediately have to pick up the next one in the series and that review will be coming soon! Overall this was an interesting start to a series, one that I am interested in continuing. However, I think that I will have to take this one book at a time because the heroine is one that could get on my nerves quite easily.

DID NOT FINISH

Unlikable characters, no chemistry.

This is a new read for me and the overall setting and background of the book and the potential story lines for the series has me intrigued. I love Cat's humor and Bones has me puzzle for his bluntness. I will keep reading and see where the pages will reveal and where the characters will end up. New type of vampireism I enjoyed.

3.5 stars...
Come on, goodreads, give us those .5s already!

I just did a relisten and I think I like the audible more than the reading it. The narrator was so good as Cat and Bones.

Real Rating: 3.5

I just finished the first book of the Night Huntress series created by Jeaniene Frost.
This Halfway to the Grave was a good read, contrary to my expectations. I'm not usually surprised by the firsts books of series but this was actually a good one.
It left me wanting for more - at least for the next book, One Foot in the Grave.

About the author I don't have much to say. Frost's writing is pretty agreeable and light. A set of characteristics that permits the readers to fly the pages by.
It doesn't contain heavy vocabulary or too much descriptiveness and that allows the reading experience to flow more easily. It's not boring.
As mentioned in the Acknowledgements section, the author really has a great imagination. An important and positive aspect for me.

I really liked the plot and also the characters she presented in her book. I'm so very curious to know more about them.
My first thought: Hmmm, great characters, so well structured. However, I do not want to dwell on this point because it's only the first book and I clearly haven't seen much though I'm waiting to be surprised instead of disappointed.
Nonetheless the most thing important to say about this is that I think the characters were formed in a way so that the reader could connect to them. It really worked with me!

Paranormal action, romance and an healthy dose of laughter are the ingredients of this book. Pretty powerful mixture.

I've gotta say this, though. It's good to see that vampires can be interesting instead of just plain boring. I'm not really into this thematic but curiosity always gets the better of me, so I've read quite a number of books about these creatures of the night. I'm glad I found these!

Let's see what the future books bring.. I'm curious. Let's hope my feelings don't change.
