I think the series looks promising enough to read the next two books, but I disliked 70% of this book.

I had read so many reviews saying how similar this book/series was to BtVS that I went into it a little bit jaded. I expected something entertaining, yet derivative. I was pleasantly surprised. Although it was a little less urban fantasy than I was expecting I really enjoyed my time with Cat and Bones and I'm still excited about delving into their world some more. The small similarities to BtVS are there but hey, I am a Buffy fan for a reason.
I really liked the beginning, but really hated the end. Not just the actual ending, but the last quarter or so, which turned into a war zone of TV violence. Still, the cliffhanger pretty much ensures I'll try book two and hope it's less bloody.
So my little Chickadee friends gave me some recommendations for PNR books as I really can't seem to get into them at all.
I was firstly recommended the EIT series which I devoured and this one so I thought what the hell and tried it.
Usually any synopsis with the word vampire in it gets a huge wide berth from me, but I sucked it up (see what I did there?) and pulled up my big girl vampire panties and dived in.............AND LOVED IT!!!!
I've dived headfirst into this series and Cat & Bones have made it into one of my favourite couples!!

As I was listening to Halfway to the Grave, I posted a couple of snarky updates on Goodreads, as one does when one feels so inclined. I got a rather odd comment in reaction to my calling the book clichéd. The argument was that I was being too hard on a book that’s almost seven years old, since the PNR tropes I was mocking were still fairly new. Just for the record, I think that a) by 2007 there was tons of PNR stuff already for Frost to pull from with her flavor du jour, like Buffy and Twilight and b) even if she was the first to do every single one of those things, that doesn’t mean I can’t be annoyed by them. So, be warned, this will probably be both ranty and irreverent.

“If you run from me, I’ll chase you. And I’ll find you….”
This is what Bones told Kat. This is the last sentence in book one. FML, now I really want to read the next one and I didn't really like this one that much. I was way more invested in the first half when Kat was fighting her attraction to Bones and before he told her I love you. Blerghhh

I had this e-book for a long time but just was never in the mood to read it until recently. I totally enjoyed it. Was a fun read and not too heavy. Bones is added to my favorite male vampire list after Raphael, Jean-Claude and Wrath.

1.5/5 stars. I tolerated this book, thinking that it would most likely get better as the story progressed, but if anything it got more and more ridiculous. The plot, the dialogues, the characters, ... it was cringe-worthy and not entertaining. I have a list of grievances a mile long.
I read a lot of paranormal romances and most of their first installment are the weakest but they display potential. I don't know if I see potential in this book except for more waves of secondhand embarrassment. But if you've read the series recently please do let me know if the writing improves. There were loose ends and I'm not hating the place where the story ended so I could see myself picking up the next one, but not any time soon.

Where do I even start with this book? Should I discuss the lack of character development? That the characters are completely ripped off of BTVS? Cat is sorta Buffy, Bones is Spike etc... Also some of the plot is ripped off of BTVS. The issue Cat has with Danny is straight up a rip off of Parker loving and leaving Buffy. Also at the end of the book, Cat buys Bones a long leather duster to match his bleach blonde and dark eyebrow Spike hair.
I suppose I could get past the BTVS fanfic style of this book if only it were written better. Bullets don't "land" on you. They penetrate, rip through, wound, tear, rip, or some other violent descriptor. Also I don't understand why I'm supposed to care why Cat's mother was kidnapped or her grandparents murdered. Cat doesn't seem to give a crap. Also before they are murdered or kidnapped they are portrayed as meddling and tiresome. She stayed home to take care of her Grandfather when he had a heart attack but he is a bigoted jerk to her when she stays out to make sexy times. Sweet crying baby jeebus some of this is so far fetch. As a for instance, she's 22 and shares a bedroom with her emotionally stunted and abusive mother? On what planet? I don't know if I can stress it any stronger, Cat's mother is an assssshole and she didn't land far from the tree.
My final issue with this book is the rampant slut shaming. It's a bodice ripper but the lead character has some deep seated issues with sex thanks to her hook up with Parker, I mean Danny, when she was 16. I just can't.
Apparently all my rage reading will be this summer because my usual method of finding something good to read is failing me. Two middle fingers up to Goodreader for suggesting this trash. I am dumber for having read this book.
