Eh. The story was good, but I felt like it sort of went on forever. It felt a little like they were just trying to fill the pages in some spots.

Gods of Jade and Shadow was an intriguing read with its rich backdrop of Mayan myth and folklore, which immediately pulled me in. Cassiopea is a likeable protagonist with a strong, grounded voice, and her chemistry with Hun-Kamé makes the journey engaging. Still, the tone leaned a bit too YA for my taste, and I think I would have appreciated it more in my teenage years. Even so, it’s a charming, imaginative story that I’m glad I picked up.

This really didn’t work for me. Clearly many people love it, but in my opinion the storytelling and writing was felt like it was intended for a very young reader, maybe middle school level. The writing is so surface level that I felt no attachment to any of the characters and I found myself skimming at times which I almost never do.
Can't say 5 stars because that B I T T E R S W E E T ending. (Its that a spoiler? Mmm)
I can't pin down exactly what it was about the style that tuened me off, but the author's voice felt a little stilted and distant to me. To be clear, that's 100% a me problem. The premise, characters and setting are all really interesting!
