The short staccato sentences that added up to nothing. The time jump that is immediately backfilled with detailed flashbacks making the skip superfluous. A hyper intelligent superhuman playing... Online poker??

Not a fun read.

this book definitely reeled me in at the beginning. it is fast paced and the story is interesting. however, some parts of the story were boring to me and i felt like i was reading it just for the sake of finishing it. on a good note, it did make me ponder a lot about the future of humanity. i really do wished i liked it more than i did because i have a lot of interest in science but it was very difficult for me to feel immersed into the story.

This book was pretty good. It kept me interested and engaged, and had a compelling concept. It wasn’t mind blowing, but I enjoyed it.

This book did not deliver on the mind bending front that I expect from this author. The book was very straightforward, and at times it felt boring and preachy. Still good, but I expect so much more than good from his books. I want to finish it and be like "wtf did I just read?"

this was really fuuun but the epilogue had me like huuh? humanity is collapsing and the whole motivation of the mc was to prevent his sister from releasing a virus that would “upgrade” everyone (killing 13% but whatever) and there was a lot of great introspection concerning the future of humanity and the ethics of genetic editing to save lives….and then the solution was giving everyone a genetic upgrade anyway? albeit one that increases compassion, but it just felt really weird to end like that. “we cant let humanity be changed so im gonna change humanity”? but it was good otherwise :)

favorite line:

“‘If she’s not wrong about our impending extinction, what do we have to lose?’

‘Everything it means to be human.’”

Felt like an action movie with the framework of science fiction …. Not really my kind of sci fi.

I thought this was really well done. I never quite connected with the main characters but I really enjoyed the plot, the themes and the writing style. Ending was a tad predictable but in an interesting way. I would definitely recommend to people looking for a fast paced urban sci-fi book. I think I’ll try another book by this author too.
