First time reading this one! Had me yelling at Hastings, and fully enthralled in the mystery.

Sigo (muy despacito) con mi reto de ir leyendo las obras de Agatha Christie por el orden en que fueron compuestas y esta es la segunda novela de la serie de Hércules Poirot, escrita en 1923.
En este caso, Hércules Poirot es contratado por la víctima, pero para cuando este llega al lugar donde ha sido citado, el hombre que lo ha contratado ya ha muerto con una daga clavada por la espalda.
El crimen es interesante por los muchos matices y pistas contradictorias, y se demuestran dos verdades universales en este tipo de novelas: que la policía nunca mira en el lugar correcto y que todo el mundo miente (como diría Gregory House).
Tengo que decir es que el binomio Poirot-Hastings no me convence nada. Hastings no es para nada el Watson de Poirot. De hecho, a veces pienso que el único objetivo de incluir a Hastings en la novela es lograr que el lector se sienta listo, porque es difícil ser tan tonto como Hastings. 😂😂😂😂 Sus errores de juicio, sus meteduras de pata que son sobradamente evidentes. En ningún momento sorprende cuando finalmente se demuestra que Hastings ha metido la pata, ¡era evidente desde el principio! A mí me desespera este personaje. ¿Por qué es su amigo Poirot? ¿Porque recibe adulaciones y admiración de su parte? Me cae muy mal este personaje...
Respecto al misterio, sí debo decir que de nuevo yo hago mis hipótesis y Poirot va por otra parte. Es verdad que en este caso yo sí había sospechado de quien resulta haber cometido el crimen al final, pero también tengo que decir que estas sospechas las descarté durante gran parte del libro porque pensé que al final iba todo por otra parte. ¡Me engañó! Así que sí que resulta interesante seguir toda la trama de la investigación del asesinato.
Y por último, a pesar de que la Christie fue en muchos aspectos bastante adelantada a su tiempo, sí que me llaman la atención en esta novela el hecho de que hay bastantes sentencias misóginas muy propias de Poirot, pero en este caso también presentes en otros personajes. No me han agradado demasiado, la verdad.

There is something about Hasting that annoys me and the fact that he is the narrator put this book on my bad side. His character in the first book, to put it simply, would see Poirot as a madman if he does not understand his line of thinking yet sees him as a genius if he gets his point. Although this characteristic improves quite a bit his character feels so lacking still. And he's always attracted to every pretty girl that he met. Ugh.
Other than Hastings, my issue about this book is the plot twist after plot twist. And in someway the execution of such doesn't seem like pure genius to me. They would give you a murder with supporting details and then at some point that is not the murderer for there is another. If this continues on up to the end of this series, I am sure that I am not finishing this at all.
However, with regards to solving the case we get to see quite a bit of how it would unfold unlike the first one where the narrative of it all would only happen at the end of the book when the murder is already in jail and it does not make much sense.
I have a lot of issues with this book but I don't want to rant. Hopefully the third book will be better.

This is not Agatha Christie at her best. Too much of the plot here relies on weirdly biased assumptions on the part of her detective Hercule Poirot: a certain open grave must have been dug by a man because no woman would have the strength, a young gentleman's first love must have been an actress because that's the sort of person young gentlemen always fall for, and so on. This wouldn't be a problem if these deductions were proved erroneous, but such is not the case. It makes for a rather poor showing of Poirot's genius, since any modern reader is forced to conclude it merely happenstance that he solves the mystery at all.

Overall I would give this 3.5 stars.
As usual, Agatha Christie's wonderful ability to use her innate understanding of human behaviours to create brilliant characters that you can absolutely imagine is on display. This book does not just have twists, but twists upon twists upon twists. In that sense it goes a little OTT which is why I didn't give is a 4 but the quality of writing and charachter development is superb.
