During a field trip to the Black Vine Swamp, a wildfire breaks out and Nick, Marta, and their classmates are forced to leave early. Their teacher, the ever unpopular, Bunny Starch, goes back for a student's inhaler and goes missing. Nick and Marta don't believe that mrs. Starch was called away for a family emergency and try to figure out what happened. They think that another classmate, Smoke, is involved.

I read this at the insistance of my 10 year old daughter and found it very entertaining. It's a good page-turner for kids with positive messages.

I had heard nothing about Scat except it was a kids book written by an author that likes writing about the environment. Good enough for me since I had finished Ender’s Game and this was the only thing available. It was pretty boring though. I mean, its my own fault because its just not written for someone my age. Or maybe it was the lack of magic and talking animals that bores me. But it was predictable and I didn’t really give a shit. I would be interested in his adult books since I am environmentally friendly. Only if there's magic though. On to a raunchy, trashy romance novel!

Set in the marshes of Florida. It tells the story of how a cranky Biology teacher suddenly disappears during a field trip. Two students cannot accept the story being told that a known arsonist in their class was the culprit. But it’ll lead to a story of bravery, friendship, and most of all conservationism

Could not put it down!! A great read.

Fun, clever, standard positive review for Hiaasen.

kinda slow, but the writing is pretty good. made me
want to keep reading

the way hiaasen writes is clear and simple,
appreciated that

characters are likeable and are well-rounded

call backs aren't cringey and actually mean something

the plot itself was alright

Great book - just right for kids 10 and up. He doesn't talk down and he pitches it well. Grumpy teachers, delinquent kids - but everything turns out well without being maudlin. And as always, the eco-warriers prevail and big business get theirs!

When fearsome Biology teacher Bunny Starch disappears into the Black Vine Swamp, two of her students decide to look for her. Another student has also disappeared. A series of mysteries . . . but the pieces do eventually come together. The endangered animal in this book -- the Florida panther. Much more detailed and longer than Hiassen's other work, for a slightly older audience than Hoot and Flush.

Many parallels to "Hoot" and "True Blue Scouts of Sugarman Swamp." My kids will love this one.
