A surprisingly moving apocalypse

As a late entrant in a crowded field of post-apocalyptic fiction (here, a fast spreading flu), Station Eleven manages to stand out. The plot is less important than the ambience: an almost gentle exploration of a world 20 years on and beginning to wake up from its nightmare ending. Using a non-linear structure, the story tracks a handful of characters connected by various happenstance on the last night of civilization and manages to tie their tales together without too much contrived coincidence. A very solid read that will make you homesick for the world you live in.

While this apocalyptic story jumped around in time lines and POV quite a bit, the way the characters lives were woven together and interconnected was pretty magical. Having lived through a very minor version of a pandemic in comparison this brought me back to the beginning of it and how we all thought it would pass quickly and how two years later we still found ourselves in it. I’m glad I waited to read this story so a little time has passed since that time. I think it was better to have that history to embrace this amazing and believable story of what life could be like if a worse flu finds us.

I thought this was really well written, but a couple points seemed meaningless (
the letters to V, Jeevan, the ending 😭
). It was interesting to read post-COVID, and surprisingly didn’t push me back into that time (probably because this book was SO FAR past that. First read for a new bookclub!
