LOVED this book. Adored it.

You know how when you are reading a book and you find yourself thinking "Yep, oh, wow, yeah, I am going to want to read this again and again in the future"...

You know how when you start of with the book borrowed from the library and before you're even finished reading you have purchased your own hard cover copy...

You know how you tell yourself to slow down, breathe deeply, and just reflect before moving on to the next paragraph because there's just so much to take in...

You know how as you are reading you are thinking about all the friends who would love to read this book too...

That. All of that.

Admittedly, I am a big Elizabeth Gilbert fan and I've been known to indulge in some self-help, positive affirmation types of writing. That might not be your cup of tea. But still. There's so, so much to be gained from her perspective on the creative life, both for those who are aiming to be creative as their "careers" and those who are aiming to be a little more creative in their day-to-day. This book was a joy and has greatly affected the way I see things. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Big Magic is a much-needed kick in the pants for those of us who have been putting off our creative dreams out of fear, or any number of reasons we've told ourselves not to start. Elizabeth Gilbert calls out all of those excuses and gives plenty of reasons and anecdotes as to why we shouldn't let them stop us from living a creative life.

The best part of this book to me is Gilbert's voice; it reads like a coffee date with a friend who's tired of listening to your bullshit excuses and encourages you to do the damn thing (albeit a bit more compassionately than that). This is absolutely the perfect January read when you're setting intentions for the new year and needing a little motivation.

As a designer, as an artist, as a writer, Gilbert's words resonated with me strongly. It is a wonderful companion piece to Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way. Gilbert draws many of the same parallels The Artist's Way illustrates, probably because she also went through the creative recovery process that led her to Eat Pray Love. A lot of people can have the same problem with both books, that the path to creativity is a very spiritual one, and, for some, that means religious. If you take that away, Gilbert's work is still an inspirational read about breaking down personal barriers and just letting yourself do what you love.

Highly recommend, especially as a companion to The Artist's Way.
