I have never read the Animorphs series until adulthood. Reading along with my kids, ages 8 & 11 as of spring 2022. Good adventure, some suspense. There are lighthearted moments too. These are fully fleshed characters and they seem like well rounded archetypes of the typical tween/teen kids I recall from my youth.

The infamous ant book.

This one is kind of all over the place - there is a lot that happened here that I remember happening in other books, and I was surprised to see it all condensed in these 150 pages. The ants. Ax at the mall. Boiling lobsters. Trying to steal a Bug Fighter to get Ax home. Debatebly their first time in space? I wasn't really clear on that. They certainly didn't react to it.

And of course, the plot twist at the end.

Because there was soooo much going on, I don't really think it stuck the landing despite being a must-read in the series. The real highlight of this book was the absolute, unexpected HORROR of the ant morphs and hive mind.

Audiobook: In contrast to the last book, where the voice actress played Cassie a little too young IMO, this voice actor takes it FAR in the opposite direction. Marco sounds like a 45 year old republican lol. I'd hoped for, I don't know, someone that sounded like a teenager, and maybe a slight Hispanic accent? Alas.

Marco's hesitant nature makes for a great POV for this book. A great exposure to the Yeerk politics that is one of their greatest weaknesses.

This is my favorite cover so far. And here we have Marco the most reluctant Animorph. I've been expecting this reveal for a few books now. It's surprising they gave it to us so soon, but that's children's lit I guess.
