I finished this book so you don’t have to.
You’re welcome.
Victoria is immature, self-centered, and impossible to please. Her imagination is ridiculous.
I kept reading, waiting for the twist that would make all her foolishness make sense, but it never came. She’s just a selfish airhead who gives bookworms a really bad name.

I’m still not sure if I liked this book but it was definitely different from my usual reads and took my by surprise. I read a review of it comparing it with Margaret Atwood’s The Edible Woman (which I will read shortly) and was intrigued. It appears to be about the roles we play today in marriage and society. Class, education and career, familial expectations. There are a few layers here and they are all leading somewhere unexpected. But I didn’t see that until the end because I really didn’t like the protagonist who is a somewhat unreliable narrator. I wondered a few times why I was still reading this book, but couldn’t put it down. I’m glad I stuck with it because the way Yeatman wraps up the story was very well done.

I did not enjoy this book. The chapters were short which was nice. The husband was awful. I kept reading even though I didn’t like it because I wanted to find out the ending. If it was a longer book, I would have DNF’ed it.
Victoria’s interior dialogue is the main “character” in this novel. She lives in an interior world where she escapes her unhappy marriage and daydreams wonderful futures. It was a bit overdone for me.

3.5 rounded up.
One of my most anticipated Canadian debut books of 2023 and it was a surprise delight! Darkly funny, a book obsessed woman stuck in a unsatisfying marriage fantasizes about a man she sees in a coffee shop and starts dreaming of ways she could off her husband. Relatable and absurd in equal measures, I devoured this and loved it on audio too. Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
