dark emotional mysterious sad tense medium-paced

Though its setup lead me to believe in a gothic romance mystery, I was positively surprised. The ending did feel rushed,as If it were heading for a twist which the author abandoned. Leaving us as alone as Petronella.

This novel was a hard one to put down as the story was entirely compelling and continued to leave me wanting to know more. However, upon completion I found myself not entirely satisfied. Without a doubt, the story flowed well, it hooked me, but the conclusion fell flat for me. Stuck in a marriage with a man twice her age, young Nella has to navigate the unknown in Amsterdam in the 17th century. Not only does she have her husband, who ignores her a great deal of the time, but she also has her sister-in-law and the servants to contend with in this new life of hers. The interaction between the characters is beautiful, absolutely believable and realistic. I believe the only character that lacked any luster was the Miniaturist. The title piece of the novel and yet this character lacked any real substance. Yet, the Miniaturist played an important roll in Nella discovering the happenstances that go on around her, but I wanted there to be more in that relationship. I simply felt like it fell short.

While this novel provided intriguing insight into the world of Amsterdam during a time of great prosperity, it was a privileged point of view that had a great deal more drama and less answers to questions than desired. The ease of reading and the quick nature of the story entrapped me so much that I almost overlooked some things, however, even upon completion I find I still want to know more. Perhaps such was the purpose.

It was a very slow story and not what I typically enjoy reading.

Meh. I feel like there was no point to the miniaturist being there? If we took her away would the story change in a significant way? I don't think so. I also feel tricked into thinking this will be way more magical than it actually was. Not reading the sequel.

I have had mixed feelings throughout my reading and left a little bit perplexed. On the other hand, the novel was a page turner and it was well developed while giving an accurate insight to 17th Century of Amsterdam. Moreover, I love the puzzling side of the book which gave more space to the reader to figure things out since Nella is in the same situation as us.

Blog Review

Edit: I have observed some comments that the characters do not seem accurate, however, in my opinion, I found the characters accurate in a way that they represent the open-minded people. For instance, Nella is one of the evident examples to my statement; she is uneducated compared to Marin and Johannes but after she has spent some time at the Brandt house, she commences to change her mind about being open and educated as a woman in the seventeenth century.
