Intriguing story but sometimes a little too obscure. Ending left hanging which was a bit unsatisfied, otherwise a good read.

A wonderful and intriguing story with a tinge of the supernatural, set in late 17th century Amsterdam, the author paints a very clear picture of the customs and social strata, commerce vs. religion. Excellent!

Stars: 4.75 (right on the border of 5 stars)

Wow! I loved this more than i thought i would. I wasn't sure how i was going to feel about it. The only reason why i gave this book a 4.75 star rating was beacuse of the slow pacing in the begining and a little in the middle. I really liked this book! I picked it up in a charity shop quickly before work because I'd finished my last book in the bus ride there, but turned out to be a good choice. I found it very engaging and although there was some twists and turns I saw coming, there were plenty I didn't. I'd recommend it!

In the golden age of 17th century Amsterdam, a surface of wealth offers no freedom from oppression and secrets can tear down even the richest of houses.

This story stuck with me for a while. It gave off gothic vibes with a house full of secrets. I loved how it painted Amsterdam and it made me want to revisit the shadowy canals and looming merchant houses there. The haunted magical realism in this book is on point!
