I listened to this book on audio book. I decided to get into it bc it was compared to The invisible life of Addie la Rue. It is about Audrey who develops some kind of weird illness (maybe or a demon?) as a child that makes it so she cannot physically be in the same spot on earth for more than 3 or 4 days without choking on her own blood and dying. Bc of this it is difficult for her to have any real long term relationships or have a family or property. She is world renowned for walking the world at least 4 times. I can see why it was compared to Addie but it really shouldn’t have been. It just doesn’t match Addie La Rues raw emotion and really doesn’t get into how incredibly sad and life altering it is. Audrey is just fine and always powers on.
I went back and forth the entire time debating if I should DNF and I think the only reason I finished it was bc of the narrator. There are the tiniest moments where this book is lovely yet they’re just not enough . We’re always being told that Audrey has done cool things in the past or the future and we never get to experience it along with her. All of the moments we get to experience seem to be the most boring parts of her life.
She has access to this strange pocket library which allows her to access parts of the earth that she wouldn’t be able to get to on foot but we don’t get any insight into the mechanism of the library or her illness which is heavily hinted at it being like maybe a demon?? I dunno!!!
The storytelling isn’t linear which is fine if done well but this jumps all over the place and I never knew where I was in time. There are ways to make this work without explicitly telling the reader but it was just so confusing I felt like I was always missing something. I don’t even know if the ending of the story was actually the end of Audrey’s story.
If you want something like Addie La Rue just get Addie La Rue. I’m giving it a 2.5 and will star it as a 3
