As always, thank you to the author and NetGalley for this ARC!
Wow, this was such an interesting read! I'm not normally one for historical fiction or magical realism, but I had been immediately drawn in by the blurb for this book, and I'm glad I requested a copy.
Aubry's tale is wonderfully told, giving us glimpses all over the world and through pieces of time. We see how she interacts with others, how they view her mysterious illness, and finally, how things reach a beautiful conclusion. Given the story that was told, the time period chosen was perfect. I don't think it could've been told properly if the author had tried setting this in modern times.
I also really enjoyed the jumps through different points of time, Aubry's story being revealed piece by piece! Definitely recommend readers to give this a try once published.

ARC from Rafe who said “you just need this”. So wonderful and adventurous and different and weird and magical. Fell in love with the main character and all her spirit.
3.75 ⭐️ Parts of this book are remarkable and at parts it loses its form/purpose and sort of drags you in weird directions. It sort of concludes itself but I’m not entirely sure I’m satisfied with where this long walk took me. Even so, I’d recommend this book for the beautiful components of it that float the rest.
If you want a linear story with a heartfelt ending, this is not the book for you. This book is unlike any other I have read. It's unexplainable, I don't know how I actually feel about it all, but the writing definitely kept me hooked. Some say they felt confused or like the author got lost by the end, but to me, I have faith in the author and what he wanted to accomplish and I just need to accept that this book was quite ambiguous and that's ok!
Do not waste your time unless you're interested in words on a page. No real plot to this book
3.5/5, rounded up, but nonetheless enjoyed! And a very happy congrats to Douglas Westerbeke for his debut novel!! He challenged himself to write, and he did, and what a peaceful, heartfelt book he created. From the wandering of the world, to the love of a mysterious library, I so see how a librarian would lovingly write a grand, peaceful, mysterious adventure.
I’m curious to read analyses and interviews on the deeper meanings meant to be explored through “A Short Walk Through a Wide World.”
