Quick Thoughts: I think the "ugly" comments went on a little to long but outside of that I really enjoyed Butterface. Gina was fantastic and her friends were a hoot. Ford was a hunky rule follower that made me smile and I loved his family. I am going to have to go read Felicia's book :) Overall this was fun and I am really looking forward to the rest of The Hartigans!

Audio Thoughts: Narrated by Brian Pallino and Savannah Peachwood ---- NAILED IT! Seriously it was so good in audio form and I highly recommend it!

You know those Kiss Cam's they show on the jumbotron's at sporting events? Well what happens when the ugly duckling is coerced into kissing Mr. McHottie for one at a wedding? All sort of awkward is what happens. He is a cop and she is a member of a known crime family. Yeah, nothing can go wrong with that. Each book in this series features a girl whom has some sort of self proclaimed 'flaw.' In this book, the heroine isn't considered beautiful and has an unusually large nose and she has had a rough life growing up always getting picked on or bullied. But Mr. Cop see's her for who she is and finds her beautiful, unfortunately, she doesn't really believe him. While she knows someone like him wouldn't be interested in someone like her, they agree to have a one night only fling. The book has some humor and a couple teary eyed/heart breaking moments. There is some steamy sexual content. It's a fun and light-hearted story with a little bit of angst. It alternates between POVs. The only thing I didn't care for was how often we are reminded of her unattractiveness. I know that is the whole theme of the book, but it felt like it was mentioned way more then needed to get the point made.

Could have been so much better. Gina should have just started swinging punches or embraced her families mobster ties and started killing. I mean, she’s entirely set up for a villain origin story.

From the synopsis, it's clear that Regina "Gina" Luca had been an ugly duckling and had been seriously bullied in high school. What was surprising was she is still cast as ugly but with a "rockin' body". Ugh. It's one thing for a character to have hang-ups and trauma from past pain. It's another to have present-tense characters constantly mentioning someone's looks in a negative, hateful way. For example, the cops leaving a paper bag on Ford's desk implying that in order to make out with her, a bag would need to go over her head. It was to the point that every time her facial features (bulging eyes, huge honker nose) were mentioned I cringed. It was even cringier when she was constantly compared to Ford, who was supposed to be gorgeous. Because of course, a gorgeous guy would never be with someone ugly. To humanize him and maybe to bring him closer to her level, he was given a couple of small quirks, but nothing major or overly annoying though. And then there is always the standby, "you are beautiful to me." Double ugh.

In the end, I felt it distasteful, disrespectful, and totally unnecessary to demonize her looks in such a repetitive, harsh, demeaning fashion. Second, it made me dislike her because she spent so much time hating on herself and then being hateful and rude to Ford for her own insecurities. I get it. No one comes out of high school unscarred. And she had more scarring than most. But get some therapy. And if she was that upset over her nose, then get a nose job. Stop trying to demonize the nice guy.

First off, I do like Avery Flynn’s writing and have enjoyed several of her other books. This one just missed the mark for me. I couldn’t get past the reminder on what felt like every page, that our heroine was ugly. I get that it was part of the point behind this story, but I didn’t like how it was done. I get that as women, we all have insecurities...but this was next level. And although I know people can be cruel, I found that constant comments regarding how ugly she was from grown ass adults to be off putting.
