I’ve loved both Avery Flynn’s books I’ve read so far — they’re always so well written, charming, with main characters that are impossible to not love and plots that are captivating with a fantastic dose of hilarity. This book was great, a lot of fun, with a good dose of angst, and a hell of a lot of smut throughout — smut which was extremely hot, fiery, and really felt like it worked between the characters. Their relationship was extremely believable, developed in a good pace, and was just utterly adorable. I definitely recommend this series, as I’m already reading the second book and love that one even more, so you can’t go wrong with these!
This is the book equivalent of a Katherine Heigl movie - great if you're in the mood for that sort of thing, but not something you probably need to read every day.
The idea of this kind of romance novel is great — a romance novel about the underdog. A woman who isn’t considered “conventionally attractive” getting the hot dude in uniform. And like, cool, I too have insecurities. But I refuse to believe that people are this mean. The author harped on her looks over and over and over and over and it was truly painful to listen to.
This one was hard to get through. Was it cute and funny, yes it had it's moments. But the constant reminder that the heroine isn't attractive by everyone, including herself, it's rough.
It's hard to put into words what I feel about this book, because it did have it's cute moments, and I do like the couple together. I'm not a huge fan of the trope, which is using the other person for information and then falling in love with them, while hiding the fact that they were used in the first place. I'm not a fan, because I always know how it's going to end. Someone always says something before the hero can and it's just a wincy mess. This one was no different.
This one was a bit worse, because of that fact that Gina has told Ford that she's been used that way before, and her insecurities about her looks are internalized but also voiced to him. Multiple times. Like...repetitively and so when the fall out does happen, I almost got to the point where I was fine with them not getting back together.
The jokes that the Senior detectives play on Ford at Gina's expense are never resolved, though as cops this falls under harassment, and the hotel joke they play on her falls under sexual harassment, and it surprised me that Ford is depicted as this rule following cop, but never reports the incidents. It's just...off a bit.
I think the constant reminders that Gina isn't attractive really made it hard to read and get through. I'm fine with unattractive heros/heriones, like everyone has a person, but the constant reminder makes it hard to find the hero likable when even he kinda starts off in the same thread of thought.
Overall, it's fine. It had it's moments, but I'm going on to the next one 'Muffin Top' with caution.

Nice summer read
It was an okay story, a nice easy read. I'm glad Gina got her happy ending and the families were all understanding.

3.75/5*
I liked this book it had many of the classic rom-com tropes, the meet-cute was hilarious and overall the romance was adorable! I also liked that they were restoring an old Victorian house together and that there was an undercurrent of mystery throughout the plot, though it could be a little cumbersome at times. Id recommend if you want a cutesy easy read romance.
**SPOILERS**
I was really hoping that this would be one of those stories where the F. lead is able to get over their insecurity, an unattractive face, that I kept picturing as Lady Gaga playing Ali from a star is born, she has big eyes, a large nose, and is of Italian descent but is a very pretty lady. I didn't want it to be like it was and have it be all about the guy "fixing" her, and her brothers waiting until she was being "taken care of" by someone else to leave the country which likely would have helped her a long time ago as she wouldn't have the association as much with currently involved organized crime criminals. I really dislike that. I was also not a huge fan of the proposal. They knew each other for maybe 3 weeks and he's proposing marriage to her...come on, just NO. I don't care how long she's been a "spinster" or how right they are for each other, no woman in her right mind should agree to that, especially after he broke her trust the way he did less than a few days before... but this is fiction so its allowed i'm just being picky, overall i really did like this book :D

Avery Flynn is an author whose name I have heard on many occasions, with quite a few of my friends being a fan of her work. Despite the number of times I’ve heard the name, it wasn’t until I heard about Butterface that I decided to give one of her books a read.
The moment I found out about Butterface I knew I needed the book. It sounded like the kind of book I would adore, and I was more than willing to dive straight into the story. I went in expecting so much, with so many ideas in my mind, that it meant the story wasn’t quite what I had imagined. However, despite this, I had so much fun with this story.
It took me a couple of chapters to be pulled into the story, to come to believe in the chemistry between the two characters, but once things got moving I found the book impossible to put down. It was a book I had to finish in a single sitting, unable to pull myself away from the events that were occurring. I found myself constantly asking what would come next, desperate to see what new element would be introduced to the story.
I admit there were some predictable elements to this one, but there was enough entertainment thrown in that I was not bothered by the moments of predictability. I was lost to the characters and storyline, wanting more of the main characters and the side characters, more than happy to keep turning the pages so I received more of the good stuff.
The one thing I will say is that this book was not the rom-com I had been hoping for. It was enjoyable, there were a few amusing moments, but it was not the laughter-fest I had hoped for. Such has been the case with a lot of the books I’ve read recently that have been labelled as rom-coms, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to stop expecting laughter with such books. Either I’m setting my standards too high, or rom-coms are not as funny as they should be. Either way, despite the lack of belly laughing, I did have fun with this story.
There is no doubt in my mind that I will be grabbing the second book in the Hartingans series, as I’m more than willing to dive into more of this family.

I really liked that the author chose a non-conventionally attractive girl as the main character. Often times in this genre the main heroines are drop-dead gorgeous, so as I read it I always have this feeling of 'this would never happen to me' or 'he wouldn't even notice me', so I am very happy that the author chose an average girl with flaws and characteristics and I applaud her for that. I don't mind her self-doubt or being called out for her looks because I find that actually relatable and believable. I do feel that she could've gone even further and explored her character more in-depth and have sent a better message.
All the praise ends here and we get to our male lead and he is as boring as they get.
Good looking, big, ambitious, jack of all trades... boring.
Him admitting he's boring does not make him less boring. I wish he was more realistic, average looking or something, but the book kind of puts him on a pedestal and is constantly comparing how attractive and beloved he is compared to our 'hideous' heroine.
I also really didn't like how their initial interest came about. It wasn't like ''Oh, she's not breathtakingly beautiful, but she has a kind heart and great personality - I like her''
it was more like ''She ugly and freaky-looking, I kinda dig that - my d*ck hard.''
It felt like a fetish sometimes the way he explained it.
I wish it wasn't so typical, it does not have to be love or lust at first sight - especially if you are going for a non-conventionally attractive character - because these things don't usually happen to us. It's mostly people that get to know us beforehand that they start having interest in us.
I do understand that I'm shaming a book for all the tropes that all the other books of the romance genre do on regular, but with a promise of a more relatable character, I hoped that the story would offer me something different too.
I rate it 3 out of 5 - It's an average, easy read, but not the kind of book you would re-read again.
