I laughed and cried with this book, and it couldn’t be more far from the truth to see it as a stuffy boring classic! Yet, due to the level of my compassion to the characters, it was heard to get through, when they were suffering - and suffering they were. I loved the ending, and was touched by it, and appreciated Dicken’s positioning of causality of political events. It is in some aspects still a time capsule (i.e. by characterizing characters in quite simple terms - Lucie is just plain good, and that’s it, or the ways characters emote), but still!

The only reason I read this book all the way through was because it was mandatory reading for my AP English class. Lord how I hated this book... I didn't enjoy or understand what was going on at all during this reading. We talked about it for two weeks in class and it didn't help improve my understanding at all. All I wondered was how my teacher got that information from this writing.

The story is hard to follow and boring, I couldn't connect with any of the characters, and wouldn't recommend this book to anyone but a die hard Dickens fan. Maybe I'll reread when I am older and my child(ren) or grandchild(ren) ask to have somebody read with them. (They might have to bribe me though.)

I DID IT I DID IT IT TOOK 6 MONTHS BUT I DID IT ITS DONE

(Can we tell I'm a bit excited?)

As always with Dickens, this is gonna need a reread or two to truly love and appreciate...so Mr. Darnay, Mr. Lorry, Mr. Carton, and Lucie, I eagerly await our next meeting

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

I have read a few of Dickens' novels (Christmas Carol, Copperfield, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist) and really enjoyed them (except Oliver, that one was ok). This story was much different than those! For one it's main characters are adults! And also, it's mostly historical and focuses on the French Revolution!

“I wish you to know that you have been the last dream of my soul.”

I did like the storyline about the woman who has to save first her father and later her husband. That was emotional and interesting! The PTSD of the father after being a prisoner for almost 2 decades was heartbreaking and well written.

Overall, I felt just meh about this one. It wasn't bad but it's definitely not my favorite.

I don't care what she's done, Madame Defarge is perfect and deserves only good things. I want to knit with her

Good story, but I had to use LitCharts to understand some of it. I don't mind Dickens' big words, but I sure think he could have made use of a few more periods! Some shorter sentences would have made the reading much easier!

Wonderful! I do not have the words to describe how I feel about this book. The words were beautiful. The characters were amazing. The story was pure genious!

This book is overrated. I read it for class and we discussed and dissected this book so much, I could not enjoy it. The first and last lines were drilled into my head. Not my kind of reading.
