french people were evil and "england prevails"
because dickens says it does, not because it makes sense for the characters and plot. dickens disappointed me with everyone absolutely drooling over lucie, while she has zero agency in the story. also why does it

? do they make it back to london? does dr manette resent charles now that he knows what really happened? who knows, certainly not me. glad i finished this, but i think i'm done with ol' charles doubledick.

Um. Wow. The last six chapters were especially amazing. I ride (and read on) the bus every day, and I don't think I've ever missed my stop - until today, deep into the conclusion of this tremendous work. I really like Dickens as a suspense writer. The whole book was very well done, but it was the second half that really did it for me. The way he portrayed the barbarism and perverted law of the French Revolution will stick with me; he made the Guillotine a character.

Plus, there is a woman named "The Vengeance," so what else can I say?

Now I want to read a history of France. Since I read it via Duke's audiobook, I can't go back and grab quotes, but man, the terror being the harvest that oppression sowed hit hard. The way Dickens phrased it was not the trite "you reap what you sow" and felt deeper to me.
