BookTube-A-Thon 2017 Challenge #4: Read about a character very different from you.

Holy cow, Thomas really knows how to character build as well as establish interactions and relationships in her writing. I'm completely blown away how flawless this book focuses on racial issues still happening in todays society. I loved every single one of the characters in this book because they reflect people in our lives. All of us know a Starr, a Khalil, a Seven, a Starr, a Maverick, a Hailey and so on. The character dynamic of this book blows my mind as well as discussing hot topics that are in our news practically every single day.

I really hope Angie Thomas writes more novels in years to come.

Without a doubt, one of the best reads I’ve ever experienced. Angie Thomas speaks of a crippling topic that haunts many neighbourhoods and families in America through the dry, witty narrative of Starr Carter. It’s funny, heart wrenching and important. A must read for anybody!

Truly loved this book. Being able to see how Starr handled the emotions of the tragedies that she's been through in both black & white spaces was so raw & real. Surprisingly, the book also had good moments that made me laugh as well. Can't wait to read the other books in the serious.

Wow, what a great book by a new author. The author does a great job of making you feel the true uncomfortableness, the ridiculousness of racism. As a teacher I have read research about how hard it is to break the cycle of poverty. This book encompasses all the statistics for why breaking the cycle is so hard.

This book is a gut wrenching, honest and excellent read. It sheds light on some shameful aspects of our society. It is frustrating, hopeful, truthful, tragic and infuriating all at the same time. I loved the complexity of the characters and the situations that they encountered.

If you are craving the answer to some of the one-dimensional reads out there and want something that prompts you to re-examine our urban environments and aspects that divide our society, pick up this book.

Hailing from Chicago, I couldn't help but think...how many times has a scenario similar to this book happened in recent years.
