My only regret is not reading this sooner. Besides being an amazing novel I couldn't put down, I think it should be essential reading for anyone struggling to understand Ferguson (for example) and the Black perspective on police shootings, not filtered through news media -- especially if you prefer to learn through fiction writing! For me, it was eye opening.
I loved this book. I'll be honest, I'm white, and I never really fully understood the issues black people have gone through. How could I? I will never be able to walk in their shoes, but I feel like this book helped me understand. I feel like everyone needs to read this book!
This book woke me up. It showed me the value of a life is not based on the decisions they make. You will not understand someone until you walk in their shoes. I’ve always lived in safe areas, always had a roof over my head, always had food. Reading about how news media was calling Khalil a thug and gangster, using it as a means of justifying his death really got to me. Even Starr judged him for getting into dealing until she found out why. This book was lesson after lesson, teaching about how complicated people’s lives can be, and the history that leads to decisions is one that must be clearly understood before you get to judge the decision.
Overall I really liked the book, even tough it had some flaws. My main critic point is, that - as many pionted out - there is a double standart with rasism in this book aß black people are allowed to mock white People, but not vice versa. I would love to've seen a voice of reason inside the black community calling out this bullshit for the others.
All in all I world love to see current generations read this novel in class and discuss the good and the bad, Gehäuse it can give a lot of inside outside your own bubble.

The voice the author gave the main character rings strong and true throughout the book. Pair with How it Went Down by Kekla Magoon.
