I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I've been reading Karin Slaughter and Grant County/Will Trent books for many many years now, and it was great to dive back into this - it's been a while since I read the previous book. Something about this one truly captured me. Whilst it jumps back and forth between the past and present because of the history of the case, for once it didn't really bother me that a book did that. Except for when it left me on a cliffhanger haha.

I don't know if its the truly horrific nature of the crimes in this one, but something just captured me and compelled me to continue reading and find out who the culprit really was. Slaughter has written this book extremely well and I could not put it down.

When we found out the truth I was thrown - I had not worked this one out. There was so much going on, but Slaughter weaves it all together so well, and the horrifying events and emotions that so many of the characters deal with really got me.

I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. Highly recommend.

Karin Slaughter does it again. It was hard to follow sometimes as I have skipped a few Will Trent/Grant County books but it was enjoyable nonetheless. A devastating, heartbreaking, thrilling book that has gruesome visuals that only Slaughter can portray. An incredible book to read or listen to!

Maybe it's because this was my first time reading her books (this was a book club pick), so I had no previous connection with these characters, but I had a hard time with the book. It felt like her main focus was the relationships, but as they were written in this book, none had much depth or were very likeable. This meant that the murders and the mystery part of it was pushed to the side a bit. This meant that there was a lot of shock (and horror) in the investigation, but not as much substance as I would have thought.
The other thing I felt was weird was the author's decision to mess with the timeline. It was hard to orient myself within the story. I think she made the decision so her main female character wasn't alone or dating in her 40s. It just felt like a poor decision, especially because that's reality for a lot of people.
