I truly believe that ya or kids books can be read by all ages (especially fantasy). But it is very clear to me that all the people that recommended this to me as a "must-read" where looking through thick nostalgia glasses. I don't blame them at all. Some of my favourite fantasy series are also ones that I enjoyed in my childhood. But this one wasn't one of them.
I've soldiered through the series in the hope to enjoy it as much as was promised to me. I liked the first book a lot, but after that reading became tedious. The world building was cool, and the characters very likeable but it failed to hold my attention.
I regret that I will never be able to enjoy it as much as the people that have nostalgia for it. To me it was just too juvenile. But I definitely think it is fun for 10-12 y/o that like animals you know, the actual group it was meant for lol.

Maybe 4.5?

This was probably my favorite of the three books in this series so far. It took Daine and all the other characters out of their comfort zone, and I enjoyed the look at the different land and how they did things.

I also loved the death goddess that Daine interacted with, and that we finally got confirmation that she is, in fact, a demigod! The scene where she borrows the death goddess' power to animate the dinosaur skeletons and mammoths from the museum to absolutely wreck the palace and chase down the emperor was incredible. Even if it was pretty clear that Numair wasn't dead (from story conventions, not from her POV).
