Daine should lose her temper more often!!

"'Won't someone else do? I'm supposed to behave myself here. And don't you already know if he'll listen to your warnings? You're a god, after all.'

The Hag crackled, spraying food on the cushions. 'You are a funny thing! No, a vessel for a god's power can't be just anyone.'

'Is it because my da really is a god, like the Banjiku said?'

'No, or we'd have even fewer vessels than we do now. Most mortal women die giving birth to a god's child, for your information. No, for a vessel we need a mortal with imagination, a strong will, and determination. And anger—plenty of it.'"

'''Badger—do all gods make mistakes?'

He glared at her. —Rarely. I have not made one in ten centuries, so perhaps I was due. Even the greatest gods err now and again. When they do, the results are catastrophic.— He looked at the dinosaur skeletons looming in the shadows. —Their world ended through a god's mistake.—"

As good as an audiobook as it is to read.

Emperor Mage is absolutely the most memorable book of the series. Incredible setting, complex characters, truly tough emotional moments. That said, it's a 4 and not a 5 because I feel like the development between Daine and Numair is frankly rushed. It reads like Tamora Pierce has a billion little scenes between them that live in her head and have been cut from the text, like there should have been a book between Wild Magic and Emperor Mage that contained them. As a kid, my imagination filled in the gaps, as the rapport and chemistry are obviously shown on page, but it doesn't make sense to the reader that they have this level of development, because most of it has taken place off page!

Gripes aside, everything else is great. The Graveyard Hag and the hyenas stand out as some of the most memorable godly characters I've read anywhere. There's a reason I keep coming back to this series every few years: this book is it.

My favourite book in the series so far! So much action, and magic, and great new characters! Loved the villain, and all the animals of course.
