This book was eye-opening in a new way to me. You live in a Nordic country as a liberal, leftist white person who values diversity and empathises with immigrants and you sort of start thinking that, in a way, you acknowledge and understand what immigrants go through. But then you read something like this and it's plain to see how you'll just never really grasp what it's like to be othered in the way that these people are. This is a book about an immigrant's experiences in Sweden, but I bet a lot of it relates to immigrants in Finland (where I live), and many other places as well.

The writing is poetic in multiple ways. It often reads like poetry and kind of looks like poetry when you look at the page. It also feels like the reader has to do some work to interpret what they're reading, much like with most poetry. The main character, Amor, narrates in first person, and the things that he imagines happening mix into the descriptions of what is actually happening. It's a fascinating thing to read and watch unravel.

Dialogbaserad, rapp, smart, tryckande. Jag skulle gärna se den på scen. Aningen svår att komma in i, men höll stilen. Bra karaktärer.

Jonas Hassen Khemirin Soitan veljilleni -pienoisromaani on rakennettu puhelinkeskustelujen varaan.

Khemiriä on paljon kehuttu, ilmeisesti syystä. Pakko saada lisää.

Though too much was said between lines for my taste (because I confuse easily), I still thoroughly enjoyed this book. Well-written and hard-hitting, I Call My Brothers touched me with its heartbreaking narrative and -especially- with its subtle portrayal of the main character. Towards the end, my heart was pounding excessively even when no apparent excitement was present and for that, it stood out to me.

Otroligt bra läsning. Smått förvirrande? Absolut. Tankeväckande? Så tankeväckande som det blir.
