I thought I’d heard enough about this book to have it be spoiled - I was wrong. A lot darker that I ever imagined, in the best way. Raw, unfiltered human thought and emotion. The “1984” of marriage. Delightfully difficult. The ending truly is the best part.
Little to no character diversity, but it’s due to the setting which is fair.

The first half was incredibly boring, and while the second half picked up some, the lack of any likeable characters made it into a chore to read.

This book was very intimidating to me, it seems to have a mix of people who both love it and hate it. Somehow I had managed to avoid all spoilers for both the book and the movie. I still have yet to watch the movie. I was honestly scared I wouldn't like this book at all, especially once I started it. This was one of the reasons I put it off for so long and why I took awhile to read it.

All I knew about this book was that it had to do with a mans wife going missing. So in the beginning when we are only getting his point of view, I hated him. This wasn't due to thinking he did it, right from the beginning I assumed there had to be something else going on. I hated him because he was selfish and inattentive. He didn't seem to love his wife, nor really anyone but his mother and sister. This bothered me greatly, I think he should've been more of a husband then what he was.

When we started getting her point of view, I despised her as well. She was seemingly just as selfish, instead of being a loving wife. Granted, he wasn't the greatest husband but I mean....just leave. I know easier said than done in some cases, but this would've been an easy to accomplish type of situation. She was also extremely ignorant and that drives me insane. She needed to be put in her place, not necessarily murdered but definitely knocked down a peg or two.

Overall the twist in this novel wasn't all that surprising to me, this could be because the obvious guesses seemed way to obvious. With the amount of good reviews I had seen I knew it wouldn't be an extremely easy to guess twist, however, it was much easier than I had initially expected. I thought the book was going to end different than it did, but the ending did make sense for the way the story was going.

The writing style of this novel was decent, I think it could've been better. However, it also could've been much worse. My main issue was that the author seemed to stick to certain personality traits that we could read about and also be shown. She just kept reiterating the same points just wording it different. This was definitely a low point for my enjoyment, as well as the seemingly slow pace. It either went to slow or there was a huge gap of time that you didn't get any information from.

Overall I think it was a decent thriller, especially for beginners in the genre. This was a 3.5/5 star read. I will probably never reread it nor am I that intrigued to watch the movie. I did enjoy the time I read it in and am glad it's finally off my TBR.

Pretty good! This book has both slow burn and thriller aspects and Gillian Flynn did an impeccable job weaving early plot points in without making them feel like a stretch for cohesion. The ending left me unsatisfied, but in a realistic way. My biggest criticism is that Nick was so annoying and that his redemption arc seemed to be spoiled by his spinelessness, but again unsatisfied in a realistic way. 3.5 stars rounded up.
