A more philosophical, and of course theological, affair than most Discworld books, this is a bit of an odd-one-out when it comes to the series, taking place in a setting and with characters that aren't directly revisited in any other book in the series. This gives it the freedom to be grander and more sombre than many of the others, which is fitting given that the topic is belief, gods and organised religion. The central concept, that of a God who has hardly any power left because no-one actually believes in him any more, they're just afraid of the might of the church is an incredible idea which Pratchett is thorough about exploring every facet of. The plot is pretty thin and serves mostly as a vehicle for these different theological musings, but these explorations of what it means to be a God or a believer, the nature of faith and the way organised religion can stifle belief with fear, are all fascinating. There's plenty of profundity here between the laughs, most of which come from Ephebe, a parody of ancient Greece complete with philosophers running naked in the streets after having a good idea in the bath. Yet compared to the humour elsewhere in the Discworld, here it is almost exclusively satire, the subject matter being too heavy for much in the way of wry wordplay. The book's strength is in the depth and breadth of its exploration of its themes, and at this it is a great success.
