I read Discworld for the wit and Small Gods gets the bonus of tackling one subject on which I find irony to be specially effective. Pratchett's stories are know for the ingenious ways with which he approaches humans and society and pulls on both our highs and our lows for laughs and criticism. Small Gods might be his best yet (on my own journey through Discworld).
If there is a concrete case to be made for the strength of fantasy and humour as high value art, for pleasure and utility together, this has to be one of the foundations.
Recommended to everyone. If this book gives you a hard time you probably need it (the book) or deserve it (the hard time).

“Humans! They lived in a world where the grass continued to be green and the sun rose every day and flowers regularly turned into fruit, and what impressed them? Weeping statues. And wine made out of water! A mere quantum-mechanistic tunnel effect, that'd happen anyway if you were prepared to wait zillions of years. As if the turning of sunlight into wine, by means of vines and grapes and time and enzymes, wasn't a thousand times more impressive and happened all the time...”
The best Discworld novel I’ve read so far. As with all of Pratchett’s books, it’s so packed full of wry jokes and pearls of humanist wisdom (as well as fantastic characters and a nice, tidy plot) that I can’t write a review that will do it justice. Everyone should just read it.
